Her Liberty team a point down, Weatherspoon took a few quick dribbles before heaving an obligatory last-second shot from half court.

Charlotte Smith (UNC) and Arike Ogunbowale (Notre Dame) hit game-winning shots to win national titles.

Weatherspoon hit a shot to extend the playoff series by one more game, which her team lost.

I equate T-Spoon's shot to the Boston Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk's game-winning home run in the 6th Game of the 1975 World Series. A dramatic finish to a lengthy game. But it enabled the Red Sox to tie the Series to a deciding 7th game, which the Cincinnati Reds won.

As dramatic as T-Spoon's shot and Fisk's homer were, they didn't decide a championship.

Weatherspoon’s shot was probably the only possible shot available for the team. If she misses the halfcourt shot, they lose the game.

For ND, they had some time to get off a better shot. I’m sure it wasn’t the play McGraw drew up as all they needed was a point to win as the score was tied. So if Ogunbowale misses the desperation three, the team doesn’t lose and probably goes on to win in OT, seeing as McCowan very recently fouled out of game.

Weatherspoon's team still lost the series.

Ogunbowale's shot still won the national title for Notre Dame.

Yawn. Sick of hearing about this. It was one shot that went in from half court like 20 yrs ago. The fact that the WNBA still gushes over this tells you a lot about why the WNBA is a failure regarding its lack of fan base. I mean, she wasn’t even all that good when she was in the WNBA. She’s not even one of the 50 best all time WNBA players.

If a Sacramento player had done it, no one would even remember.

Pilight put emphasis on “the shot”, but the reason for the article is to talk about one of this year’s Naismith Hall of Fame nominees.

The title of the article was changed

the Shot is a part of WNBA folklore. Once the Liberty do something else maybe its importance will fade.

I question whether Spoon deserves to be in the Naismith. I suppose she was near the end of her career her entire time in the W, but she just couldn't shoot. Defenders would lay 10 feet off her. Same with Debbie Black. Maybe she gets in due to mythos from the mists of the 80's, her defense, her hustle -- and, yes, the overhyped half court shot, which many players at all levels have done.

Yeah, she'd have to be given significant credit for what she meant to the team/league, her efforts to build a fledgling league off the court, and the intangible stuff like leadership and energy. Because the raw numbers aren't really there.

I don't quite agree with ClayK that as much of her rep (or "The Shot"'s rep) is purely down to her being New York based, but you usually need some basic level of counting stats to get into these places. TSpoon's mean that she'd probably require a noteworthy coaching career (or at least a visible broadcasting career) to get in. Especially considering the limited number of women that the Naismith recognises.

If you're from New York, especially.

It's really only the people from Manhattan who think civilization ends west of the Hudson River, along with other cognitive distortions -- not all New Yorkers.

The idea that she is even a finalist is ludicrous in my opinion.

No way. There are many of us in Manhattan who know that civilization extends to Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Beyond those four boroughs... iffy. Smile
