I hope they do find a good job for Holly at UT. She's obviously a nice person, and loves the school. It makes the whole thing sad, but necessary.

The cafeteria has an opening. There is also another on in the library.

+1

I'm a blue bleeding UCONN Husky fan and I never thought I would feel like this in a million years, but I do. Holly was put in a literal no win(ha!) situation. She followed the woman who MADE women's basketball what it is. Literally, Pat is her own Mt. Rushmore. Not only did she follow her, she followed her through an illness that claimed the life of the legend waaaaaaaay too early. Now, I understand why Tennessee did that, in part because of familiarity, but also because it's what the players, fans, and the entire program needed to heal. That press conference that I listened to of Holly's was just heart-wrenching.

I agree that Holly should be treated with respect. Whatever her failings, she's given her entire adult life to the Lady Vols. Either give her a position in the AD or let her "retire" with some compensation package in lieu of a buyout. Firing her would be like a kick in the *** on her way out the door.

In related news, Walz gave a non-denial denial of the rumors today. I don't know if he's entertaining a potential Tenn recruitment, or using it as leverage for more $$$ at Louisville, which seems unlikely given his fairly recent extension.

Expensive buyout.

"Warlick’s contract runs through April 30, 2022. She received a new contract in August.

She was earning $690,000 annually. Her contract called for her to receive one-third of the salary remaining on her contract if she was fired without cause, equaling a buyout of about $710,000."

I haven't heard any Holly comments yet, but I sincerely hope she feels a sense of RELIEF that comes with knowing it's The Right Thing, for a program she's given her lifeblood for. She's done all that she could.

Onward and upward. Cool

(PLEASE, not Jeff! Shocked )

I really don't want him either.

And ugh, Dean Lockwood is running the show while they look for a new coach. Bad idea. He should have been let go right along with her.

But Walz firmly denied wanting the job, saying he is committed to Louisville:

Quote:
“All these rumors get started every year in March,” Walz said. “It never changes and it’s not gonna change ... Their job’s not open. I’m not gonna worry about that, and we’re gonna focus on our basketball team.”

Lady Vols hot board: Jeff Walz, Kellie Harper, Tina Langley among names to monitor

https://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/college/university-of-tennessee/womens-basketball/2019/03/27/lady-vols-tennessee-basketball-candidates-holly-warlick-jeff-walz-kara-lawson-kellie-harper/3066070002/

Impressive how they managed to avoid any non-white candidates (other than the non-coach wildcard)

I’m gonna pause on commenting about Holly but agree with the post that the woman hopefully has a sense of relief - and a job offer elsewhere in the athletics department.

Not sure how I feel about Walz but certainly that’s a splash hire. If I’m Fulmer I’m going for Wes Moore or Kellie Harper. I truly believe Kellie has it.

She's the head coach at Rice. She's been an assistant at Maryland (associate HC under Frese) and Georgia (under Landers).

Oh. Nope. Hasn't really built her program until recently.

Thanks for pointing that out. LaChina Robinson is appropriately giving light to this on Twitter. The whiteness of that list is a telling sign and revealing about the Knoxville paper’s editorial. I find it odd that Nikki Fargas, Nikki McCray, Michelle Clark-Heard, or even coach Jack are not mentioned...but wait wait we must include Tina Langley

I haven't seen Walz deny anything. He's merely said that the job wasn't even open when his opinion was solicited earlier, and that he was focusing on the tourney. I thought he went out of his way to avoid denying being interested in or approached about the position.

Nikki McCray just got to ODU and probably wouldn't leave...although she might, for the right paycheck. Nikki Fargas is one of those either love 'em or hate 'em coaches among the Knoxville crowd. Why they didn't consider Michelle Clark-Heard or Felisha Leggette-Jack speaks more to the provincialism of the Knoxville paper than to any prejudice, IMNSHO...they don't know those conferences. (Remember, I lived there for 35 years) I'm really surprised Tina Langley's name was mentioned (here I betrayed my ignorance, though). I don't know why they left out Bridgette Gordon, either, other than that she was Holly's assistant and has never been a head coach.

It's funny how Niele Ivey's name comes up for every P5 job that opens up....except this one.

I've liked Langley for a while. I thought she might be in the mix for the UGA job when Landers retired.

Maybe this is the job that entices Smesko to leave FGCU.

My guess is they will hire a female coach. I could be wrong though.

Karl is brilliant, imo. Langley is just *starting* her legacy at Rice....she needs more time. Niele is a great candidate, but....no head coaching experience, right? THAT'S a big step.

I wanna just add that, along with a sense of relief, I also hope Holly is surrounded by people who will reinforce for her the idea that her efforts do not amount to failure: true, she couldn't maintain/regain 'what once was', but I'm still am not convinced even PAT could have kept it going, good health or not. No dynasty is eternal.

And, while I'm pretty certain Holly isn't heading to the unemployment office for $$$, I DO hope TN honors her contributions, and keeps her on in a meaningful capacity. She has a lot to offer, no doubt, in the way of management, understanding the LV culture, recruiting (?), etc.

(....and if ANYBODY goes after Kelly Graves, I'll beat 'em with a stick! Shocked Razz )
