Wonder if Cambage is going to report. She has All Star obligations and the All Star game.

Excerpts:

I hope that people find motivation from my journey and encouragement for themselves. It’s not a weakness to have setbacks or to be injured. I am stronger and wiser for every single one of mine.

No matter how many tears I cried or how much it hurt, I can retire at 25 knowing that it was all worth it. I was still able to play for Australia and achieved some great things. I’ll be forever grateful for that.

Apparently not, which is understandable. O'Hea & Tolo aren't there either.
Sami made it, despite being involved in the All Star weekend.

I follow BA on Instagram and watched the Cayla George takeover. She was there very briefly, but it didn’t look like she participated in any training.

Squad for a tournament that takes place directly against the latter stages of the WNBA playoffs, interestingly enough. Unlikely to be an issue, but it'd be funny if the head coach of the team couldn't attend the tournament due to a conflict. More likely is that Cambage won't be available.

Almost irrelevant for Olympic qualification, by the way, as 7 of the 8 teams advance to the Olympic pre-qualifiers in November.

I'm surprised that Alanna Smith is already eliminated. As far as I know, her current injury isn't serious. I guess Sandy is really hating what she sees with the Mercury. Laughing

As I recall, they can only take one naturalized player, so it would be either Mitchell or Whitcomb. Mitchell probably gets the nod because the Opals need a PG more than an SG. Talbot, Allen, and O'Hea have all played 2,3,4. Other than that, my guess at cuts would be Garbin, Blicavs, and Bishop.

Nice bonus to have Leilani available (and a head coach too, I guess)

Ezi Magbegor led the Opals in scoring in their easy wins over Philippines last night, and New Zealand tonight.
Opals vs China tomorrow night should be a better game.

I expected more from New Zealand, especially these two players:

Kalani Purcell - 0 points, 2 rebounds Shocked
Penina Davidson - 4 points, 6 rebounds

not sure why. they were decent D1 players but not outstanding. I think Purcell was good but played for a second tier school. Davidson got minutes but mostly off the bench as a role player.

Kalali in particular has been a very solid WNBL player so I think it's fair for root_thing to be disappointed with that output. I haven't seen the game yet so can't comment. I think NZ are capable of being more competitive against us than that (I wouldn't have guessed a margin that big), but we were never going to lose that one.

They were facing Cayla George, Ezi Magbegor, and Abby Bishop. It's not like they were matched-up against Liz Cambage. I wasn't necessarily expecting mega-numbers, but mediocre wouldn't be asking too much. Purcell's 0 points and 2 rebounds in 20 minutes is just bad. You could stumble into more production than that just standing under the basket. As for Davidson, the 6 rebounds are fine but I'd expect more than 4 points. I watched her a lot at Cal, and she could be a very effective player. You don't have to be a star to perform well in these international tournaments. On the other side of the world, someone named Jenifer Muñoz put up 20 points against Team USA. I doubt all of them were against Khadijah Sessions. Razz

Opals got into a 9 point hole vs China, spent the 2nd half trying to claw their way out of it, Leilani put us ahead with 10 seconds left in the game, but Ting responded immediately.
China 70 - Australia 69

This is hot news on Chinese social media at the moment, although 90% of the retweets are using this result to diss the inept Chinese men's basketball team, such is the fate of women's basketball unfortunately - never celebrated in its own right

The main reason Opals lost was because they were outrebounded - 37-46 - this is the department that China has improved the most these couple of years since this coach has taken helm. He picked many players that are not scorers but can run and jump and play defense (and mainly under 24 of age and therefore more coachable), and the results have shown that this is a step in the right direction. Certainly things could change during the final, and I certainly expect the Opals to revenge this loss (while not counting out Japan's chances.)

Though this win gives Chinese players a lot of confidence (especially since they lost by 40 a year ago), at the end of the day this is a meaningless tournament. Opals are clearly more talented but trained for just a week; China trained for 4 or 5 months. I should probably point out that this Chinese team is different from the team that played in the WNBA preseason roster-wise: while China doesn't have a Cambage it is also missing 1/3 the team: at least 4 main players (Li Meng, Sun Mengran, Wang Xuemeng, Pan Zhenqi) are held by the PLA (Army)-owned Bayi Kylins club, which has refused to release players for this tournament because it is preparing for the World Military Games. Expect these players in the Asian Qualifiers.

Japan continues to have our number at the Asia Cup. This time a convincing 76-64 win.
Aussies will be left to play for the bronze. Japan to play the winner of China-Korea for the cup.

For a coach who claims to be defensive minded, Brondello’s teams are both pretty miserable as it.

I have to wonder if Australia is even worthy of contending for a bronze in the 2020 Olympics?

Cambage Opals and non-Cambage Opals are two very different teams. We did win silver at the world cup just 12 months ago.

What if Cambage demands to be traded to another country's national team?
