Felt this needed it's own thread.

An investment group led by the co-founder of the Alibaba Group is close to a deal to buy the Liberty, a person familiar with the purchase told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person, who said the deal could be done within a week, spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private. The WNBA’s regular season begins in May.

The schedule has already been released, but I wonder how many games can be moved to Barclays?

Tsai joined Michael Rubin to buy the Carolina Panthers(March 2018).
Tsai owns the NLL's San Diego Seals(Oct. 2017).

Tsai has also been rumored to want an Arena Football team playing at Barclays.

Trump will probably have some agency block the sale for national security reasons. Razz

This has nothing to do with Alibaba itself. Otherwise, as a stockholder, I'd be outraged at such a bad business decision. Twisted Evil

Also, let's not get our hopes up that they reschedule games at Barclays this season. They might still play at WCC this season and move to Nassau in 2020. Still a major upgrade over WCC.

Great news... Cool

The #1 thing I always look for in an owner is "Do they have money coming out the wazoo?" Razz

And Joe Tsai certainly has that... and more! Mr. Green

They shouldn't, especially if they play their games in Nassau.

I am absolutely getting my hopes up.

If the new owner has a major stake in the nets and there is little scheduling conflict I can't imagine why the new owner wouldn't want to move them to Barclays this season.

Please let this deal get finalized. And for God sake, please don't let them play in Nassau.

I’m not sure how you change the name of one of the founding WNBA teams that doesn’t move all that far, and I’m usually not sentimental like that.

While I wouldn't hate the Brooklyn Liberty (full disclosure I live in Brooklyn) there is no need for a name change because Brooklyn is part of NYC, and since I have already decided they are going to be playing in Brooklyn until told differently I feel no need to discuss any other possibilities.

I think we're jumping the gun here. First of all, I don't know how Nassau even got into the conversation. Secondly, Barclays Center pushed out the Islanders because of low attendance. I know there were some hockey configuration issues, but still -- the economics for Barclays is a lot closer to MSG than WCC. I would think there are still similar issues to resolve.

I hope this deal goes through, but we had a rumor like this last year with another rich tech guy. Not getting worked up until the official announcement is made.

Because it's still going to be vastly cheaper to play somewhere like Westchester? I wouldn't expect big changes to the venues this season, but from 2020 hopefully they can come up with something better. If the ties with Dolan and MSG are severed there's no real reason for Westchester to be the choice even if the alternative is some small college venue rather than a giant place like Barclays.

If Feinberg's willing to get into specifics, I'd be willing to believe that this deal is very likely to be completed. But given all the false dawns I can't really blame you.

This is very good news, regardless of where the team plays.

If the team plays in Barclays, it's tremendous news.

And though we'll never know, if actual money changes hands, it's the best news of all.

I'm ecstatic and hopeful with this news. As a New York resident, I think I'm about to become a Nets season ticket holder - and then a Liberty one!

Fingers crossed!
