Bonner is cored and would need to be traded. Indy has pieces they can send, so it could happen. Bonner for the #3 & K. Mitchell?

Why on god's green earth would Indiana want to do that? Bonner's 31. Dupree's 34 and a net negative. They'd be significantly better off cutting Dupree and swallowing the rest of her contract than making that trade.

Bonner #3 straight up or Bonner for Vivians?

They're in a rebuild. They're terrible. Bonner would make them slightly-better-than-terrible. What's the point? If they can get anything for giving away Dupree, great. Don't give up anything that might be a building block for another aging piece (a piece who'd look a hell of a lot worse without Taurasi and Griner as teammates, by the way).

I agree. Makes no sense to get Bonner, for anyone. As Richyyy says, the best move is to cut Dupree and at least Phoenix pick up the veteran minimum part of her salary.

Its also not a good move for phoenix. They need Bonner. She was their 2nd best player in the playoffs.

Last season, everyone kept wanting to get Bonner and Dupree together and it never happened. Why would it happen this year?

Those were players who demanded trades. Bonner does not apply to that notion i will say.

Given that no one can legally be signed until tomorrow, not terribly surprising. It's January.

There were at least rumblings going on a few days before players could officially sign last season.

Hit is hard for me to imagine the players' union fighting hard to change the rule. What are they willing to give up in exchange for getting rid of coring. Core designations affect few players, and if you give up something that affects more players negatively, why would the union as a whole vote for that? Is, say, Erica McCall willing to give up part of her housing allowance in order for Tina Charles to have more freedom?

The owners didn’t opt out of the CBA. The players did. The players didn’t do it to break even or give-and-take. They want more of something. So maybe what they’ll get in lieu of pay raises (where is the money going to come from?) are less player restrictions among other things. Who knows, with fewer player restrictions, maybe a team would be forced to treat their players better or be more well-managed so that players actually want to stay with a team instead of being forced to stay with a team.

Probably the best conclusion, but the article does say she can play SG.

That said, a lot of the talk around the opt-out was about the players wanted things to be more collaborative, wanting to be part of the discussions and involved in developing the game. So you might not be so much just dumping coring, as replacing it with something else. The NBA and WNBA have always had systems where there is at least some encouragement to stay with your existing team. The WNBA already has some of that (as well as coring), but it's pretty limited. Maybe instead of giving each team a de facto Franchise tag, they make it so that star players would genuinely be giving up some significant benefits by forcing their way home. Instead of "oh no, I can only sign for three years instead of four", maybe it's more like "do I really want to play for 100k instead of 200k?"

I've been saying for years that the only way you get meaningful change in a lot of these areas is if you chuck huge chunks of the old CBA in the trash and start again with a blank page and an open mind to ideas from all sources. The last few agreements have been 98% identical, with a few piecemeal updates and some new numbers.
