I'm not up on the rules. Can teams talk to with their free agents before making coring decisions? Like, can Vandersloot tell Chicago she wants to stay and they don't need to core her? |
Sure. I mean, players usually have exit discussions at the end of the season where they could say the same things, and I don't think there's anything to stop you talking to your own players. Of course, the player could say "I'm staying, you don't need to core me" and then walk. If they really wanted to make it clear then they could've signed an extension during the previous season.
But basically -
Jan 1-14: Team make qualifying offers to make players reserved, restricted or cored (or unrestricted if they don't choose not to make the relevant offer to a player)
Jan 15-31: Teams and players can talk to each other and negotiate contracts (to the extent that the reserved/cored/restricted limitations allow)
Feb 1: Contracts can actually start being signed. |

On social media, Glory Johnson suggested she was getting cored.
So you can probably count on her among others still getting cored.
That list is dated 1/8/19.

If Quigley is cored over Sloot, you have to imagine numerous teams will offer her the max. Basically any team in need of an upgrade at PG(New York, Washington, Indiana, Minnesota, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas). Sloot can basically pick her own destination.

It’s probably a pretty safe bet Quigley and Sloot want to stay together, unless being a WNBA marriage, it’s already on the rocks.

That list makes a lot more sense than the one Currie produced.
I knew Hamby had to be a RFA instead of reserved.
I knew Miyem wasn’t a reserved player.
I’m curious why WAS left Sanders uncored. I wonder if they have a player under multi-year core contract and they couldn’t, or does it have something to do with her health?

'All four' of the five players listed? Also, personally, I'd add the important caveat 'expected to re-sign with their teams if they sign with anyone'. |

I'm a little surprised that Indiana didn't core Shenise Johnson. They have a ton of cap space and she has the potential to be part of the their plans moving forward.

Here’s a list of 2018 cored players
Tina Charles (NY)
Angel McCoughtry (ATL)
DeWanna Bonner (PHX)
Karima Christmas-Kelly (DAL)
Candice Dupree (IND)
Crystal Langhorne (SEA)
Allie Quigley (CHI)
Most cored players don’t sign multi year contracts. When they do, that core designation should carry over to every year of the contract.

With her past injuries they probably think she is going nowhere.

Johnson's not worth much now. Whatever offer she gets that's more than the vet minimum she should take.

Wonder why Dupree and Bonner can't get back together on the same team!

Bonner is cored and would need to be traded. Indy has pieces they can send, so it could happen. Bonner for the #3 & K. Mitchell?

Why on god's green earth would Indiana want to do that? Bonner's 31. Dupree's 34 and a net negative. They'd be significantly better off cutting Dupree and swallowing the rest of her contract than making that trade. |

They're in a rebuild. They're terrible. Bonner would make them slightly-better-than-terrible. What's the point? If they can get anything for giving away Dupree, great. Don't give up anything that might be a building block for another aging piece (a piece who'd look a hell of a lot worse without Taurasi and Griner as teammates, by the way). |
