Interesting that the ACC Player of the Week award went to Syracuse's Tiana Mangakahia, when espnW's national Player of the Week award went to Notre Dame's Jackie Young.

Luuc, will Mangakahia get a look for the Opals? I see she played in the under age groups. Her performance the other day was stupendous and I wondered about her relationship with the national team.

I think she should be in the mix for sure. The Opals guard situation is pretty grim at the moment. The closest thing to a "lock" we have right now is one of Mitchell and Whitcomb being in the team, which leaves 3 or 4 other places wide open for everyone to fight for.
As you say, she has been in the national team system at the junior level, which can't hurt her chances either.

In addition, ND's only games last week were the three Vancouver Festival games and Arike, not Jackie, was named MOP of the tournament.

Realistically, politics being what they are, the ACC wasn't likely to name an ND player two weeks in a row, much less name Ogunbowale two weeks in a row. Gotta spread things around, ya know.

Ogunbowale had an outstanding tournament, averaging 24.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

But as the espnW article noted, in the three games in Vancouver, Young averaged 20.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists. For the season, she is averaging 18.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists.

Jackie Young could have easily been the tournament MOP. But since she was not, it is njice to see her honored as the National Player of the Week.

The ACC does tend to put a cap on the number of times a player can win POTW. Alana Beard won the award between 5 and 6 times per year for 2002, 2003, and 2004, even though she was far and away the best player in the conference. The only other year when someone came close to that was 2003, when Iciss Tillis had 4 (and Duke continued its undefeated streak in ACC play).

But the ACC, in its history, generally tries to make sure at least 8 different players win the POTw AWARDS.
