US has beaten Venezuela (score - 21-9) and Sri Lanka (21-8 ). In the two games combined, Boston is 13 for 13, Brunelle is 12 for 14, Bueckers is 6 for 11, and van Lith is 5 for 6 from the floor. Against Sri Lanka they were combined 18 for 20. In the two games they were also 3/4 from the FT line (but hey, Boston did miss her only free throw).
They play their other prelimary round games against Egypt and Ukraine on Friday.

US beat Egypt (score 21-4) and previously-unbeaten Ukraine (21-9) today to win its group.
US beat Ukraine largely with defense. Boston and Bueckers combined shot block total must have been in double figures, and van Lith had several great steals. Ukraine scored ONE basket from inside the arc, the rest of its 9 points came on four long 2 point shots.
Boston is HUGE by the way. Not just tall, but looks like she weighs 50 lbs more than Brunelle. She is an incredibly intimidating presence in the paint.
Where is van Lith going to school? She is good and a total bundle of energy on both offense and defense.
Quarterfinals are next Tuesday. Semi-finals and finals are Wednesday.

Haley Van Lith (WA, 2020) is a consensus prospect in her class (#2 per Prospects Nation; #3 per Collegiate Girls Basketball Report; #6 per Blue Star). Her AAU team is the Northwest Blazers. No doubt every top program in the country would love to add a PG of her caliber.
But what is interesting is that Talia Von Oelhoffen(WA, 2021), Van Lith's AAU teammate, is ranked #5 in her class by Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and #8 by Blue Star.
And Collegiate Girls Basketball Report has a third AAU teammate - Brooklyn Rewers (ID, 2021) -- ranked #58 in her class.
It will be interesting to see if these players are interested in playing for the same collegiate program.
As an aside, the Northwest Blazers have produced other names of note over the years, including Brittany McPhee (Stanford), Elle Tinkle (Gonzaga), and Kelsey Moos (Arizona State)

Caught the Ukraine game on this stream. You have to search for it.
The US team of Boston, Bueckers, Van Lith and Brunelle is one-third of the great U17 team. How do they determine when to sub, since there's no coach?
A ton of schools are recruiting Bueckers and Van Lith. I wouldn't be surprised if Van Lith stayed in the northwest. |

It appears they have adopted a fixed rotation and simply rotate at every stoppage, whether that's 10 seconds or a minute apart. It struck me that they were subbing quite a bit more frequently than other US teams I've watched in the past.

Well the US certainly wasn't shooting lights out today. Lots of missed shots. For example, Boston got her own rebound three times and missed the put back three straight times. Some bad shot selection to go with it.
With 5 minutes to go US led only 7-6.
It it wasn't for their still-terrific defense, US would have lost this game to the Netherlands. Instead US finally took a few point lead and held on. Forced several shot clock violations and turnovers and got a couple steals down the stretch. US continued to miss shots, but they prevailed 18-14.
On one possession with about two minutes to go, Boston missed a chippy and the putback; Bueckers got the rebound and scored as she was basically being tackled by a defender.
Boston seemed frustrated today (and a couple of Netherlands players paid for it by getting hammered inside).

FIBA's Secretary General, Patrick Baumann, died of a heart attack today while attending the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. The Swiss lawyer was 51. He was often mentioned as a potential future IOC President.
He was a big proponent of the 3x3 version of the game.

Unlike yesterday, US came ready to play. All four of them. Were quick and aggressive. Played smothering defense and Boston had double digit rebounds.
Bueckers made some great slashes to the basket without the ball and Brunelle and Boston hit her with good passes for uncontested layups. One by Brunelle was one handed with her right hand tossed behind her over her left shoulder. A thing of beauty.
Bueckers truly looked like herself for the first time in this tournament today. She was all over the court and looked great.

US crushed France, 18-4, to win the gold. Stifling defense completely shut down the French. Meanwhile Bueckers went nuts.
Paige really showed in the two games today why she's the top-rated 2020 recruit. She did everything.

Pretty sure I saw Dawn Staley in the stands during the preliminary rounds. Given her national teams position, she probably got USA Basketball to pay for her recruiting trip.
But reportedly ND AC Carol Owens was there in Buenos Aires at least today for the medal rounds. Considering that she coaches posts, I assume she was showing the flag primarily for Boston (Although ND is also recruiting both juniors and has a verbal from Brunelle).

If Bueckers goes to Notre Dame, Azzi Fudd will follow. And they, rumor has it, will try to convince Aliyah Boston to join them.

But Boston will probably make a decision by this November, whereas Bueckers has another year to decide and Fudd has two more years. I hope that Boston chooses ND and then Bueckers and Fudd follow.

If that happens, ND should win three or four of the next seven NC's, beginning with 2019, given that the other teammates will likely be of typically Muffetian high quality nature and nurture. |

I believe that the UCONN Huskies will be more than up for that challenge.
