Is Mercury guard Leilani Mitchell now a lock for WNBA's Most Improved Player award?

Mitchell has scored in double figures in 12 of the past 13 games and is averaging 13.8 points, up from 4.4 in 2018. Her assists are up from 2.3 pg to 4.1, rebounds from 1.4 to 3.3, field goal percentage from 35.1 to 45.7 and 3-point percentage from 34.1 to 45.0 (third-best in the league through Tuesday).

It would be bizarre if she won the award, since she has already won it once before already.

I think she’s one of those players that has a tendency to get slighted. (Likely because of her size). When given the opportunity, she shows herself to be a very good player, but teams are always looking for other players. The result being that she has some great seasons and some not so great seasons because of her opportunities.

Previous MIP discussions:
July
August

To me, the MIP is a one-time award given to a younger player who elevates their status from a marginal player who could be cut at anytime to a player who shows they’ll likely be around for a long time... kinda like a breakthrough award.

ROY winners never win MIP because they’ve already broken out their first year.

Time is no longer on the side of the Phoenix Mercury as they await the real Diana Taurasi

The lingering recovery of Diana Taurasi coupled with unfamiliarity across the rest of the roster has left Phoenix searching for answers.

Phoenix Mercury honor women of inspiration through custom sneakers
September marks the end of the 2019 WNBA season, and events such as the Mercury's annual Woman of Inspiration Night highlight a strong summer in sneakers.
