Here is a fun, little game (unless you are a Liberty fan). Take any franchise and make your best starting 5 using only players that the franchise drafted from 2000 forward. I don't include the first few years because the initial draft included all players and 1999 included players as a result of the ABL folding. Also, this does not include dispersal drafts for folded teams; only the annual draft of college and foreign players.

I'll take Chicago:

C - Sylvia Fowles
F - Elena Delle Donne
F - Candace DuPree
G - Courtney Vandersloot
G - Kristi Toliver

this team would not be super competitive right now but if we are talking about overall peak of their careers, here’s Phoenix:

Cappie
Diana
Bonner
Pierson
Griner

With Courtney Williams right off the bench.

Pretty good squad if you ask me.

To be clear, I am talking about the peak of their careers. Otherwise players from 2000 would be at a big disadvantage.

It would be hard to make a competitive team out of Atlanta's draft picks. We haven't had much luck on draft day.

Indiana:

Tamika Catchings
Tamika Catchings
Tamika Catchings
Tamika Catchings
Tamika Catchings

That's allowed, right? Smile

She was always a team player, so I suspect she wouldn't mind Briann January, Layshia Clarendon, Natalie Achonwa and Natasha Howard beside her. It would certainly be a great defense.

It would seem appropriate at this time to mention Tamika Catchings having a quintuple double in high school in 1997.
25 points, 18 rebounds, 11 assists, 10 steals, 10 blocks
Thus validating reasoning of entering her name 5 times, once for each quintuple double category.
She has been quoted as saying because of her impaired hearing that she just wanted to be normal. She was not normal on the basketball court. She was an EVERY category star.

Reminds me of an in-depth interview with Jason Taylor, the former all-pro defensive end for the Miami Dolphins. They were talkiing about all the horrible injuries he had to play through during his career, and basically asked "So when your arm was practically falling off, your knee was torn up and you were playing through your third concussion that month, how did you play that Sunday?" And he said "Oh I was pretty bad. But I was better than my backup would've been." Even falling to bits and drugged up to his eyeballs, the best option for the team was still for him to play, so he played.

The truly team-oriented move for Catch to make here is to clone herself four times and play every spot. Smile

It's still her rookie year, but I wouldn't be surprised if Ariel Atkins winds up surpassing Tayler Hill's contributions to the Mystics.

And that's coming from someone who thought Mike T made a bad draft choice in picking her.

Is this a low key way to point out that having a baby and tearing your ACL aren’t the best ways to contribute?

I would be surprised if she doesn't. And I like Hill a lot. But I didn't want to put a rookie on there because that would just make our drafting look even worse Laughing Laughing

It's technically a trade, but for all intents and purposes, Jessica Breland was drafted by the Liberty. We had a video showing Whisenant making that contingent trade before the draft, as well as one for Colson. Given our sad history, we have to scrounge for every small bit of credit we can get. Smile

After Atkins' performance in tonight's game five, she's definitely on my Mystics draft team.

This is harder than I thought. Our only keepers have been bigs. And yes, I realize I didn't have to pick nearly all current Sparks. Our draft history has left much to be desired.

1 - Parker - they say she can play all five positions
2 - Wiese or Sydney Spencer - Either one has only job - knock down open shots and open up the paint.
3 - Ogwumike - she has the athleticism
4 - Lavender - finally someone who can play her "natural position"
5 - Vadeeva - ditto

Ten of the Twelve teams were chosen, No one selected for either Minnesota or Connecticut, so here are my choices:

Minnesota

C- Janell Burse
F - Svetlana Abrosimova
F - Maya Moore
G - Seimone Augustus
G - Betty Lennox

The team is a little small, so I could put Devereaux Peters in place of Svetlana.

Connecticut

C - Jonquel Jones
F - Tina Charles
F - Chiney Ogwunike
G - Lindsay Whalen
G - Chelsea Gray

No room for either Elizabeth Williams or Alyssa Thomas in a ferocious front line.
