I'd love it if Walker makes the team now.

PG: Gray/Jones
SG: Beard/Williams/Mabrey
SF: Parker/Ruffin-Pratt/Walker
PF: Nneka/Vadeeva
C: Chiney/Brown

Works for me.

Obviously, Wiese, Sameulson, Mabrey, and Walker are vying for the final two spots. I have a feeling that despite showing out in the preseason, Walker will get cut as she seems more of a tweener (3-4) and while we need a 3, we don't need any more fours. Then the Sparks take two of the remaining three, all of whom can shoot the three (which is desperately needed given all the big bodies inside.)

I think Walker is necessary until CP3 returns. Gives some height, scoring and rebounding at the SF. TRP is a glue player. She does the dirty work, rebounding and gets a lot of assists for not being a PG. Wiese looked good in pre-season and has played with the primary players. Mabrey shows promise - can bring her back if needed during the season since she's been at training camp. Needs to attend Alana Beard's training camp for defense.

Samuelson showed some promise last season

In my opinion, Samuelson > Wiese > Mabrey. It's all relative, of course.

Didn't watch Samuelson, but Wiese on offense looked significantly more athletic than Mabrey in college, who I am surprised is still in the mix to make a WNBA team. I don't really pay attention to defense.

So I guess LA is the last to make its cuts.

Doesn't NY have one more cut to make?

Unless they’re temp suspending more than Johannes, they should have two more cuts.

Phoenix should be the most interesting one.

There’s also Aces and Mystics with a cut left.

The Sparks are the only team that doesn't have its roster finalized by the deadline...

Walker and Samuelson are the final cuts for LA.

Gray/Jones/Wiese
Beard/Williams/Mabrey
Parker/TRP
N. Ogwumike/Vadeeva
C. Ogwumike/Brown

All things considered, looks pretty good. We lost three rotation players in Sims, Carson, and Lavender, and replaced them with Jones, TRP, and C. Ogwumike. Also essentially traded Samuelson for Mabrey and Brown.

Keepers (7): Gray/Beard/Parker/N.Ogwumike/Williams/Vadeeva/Wiese
Lost (4): Sims/Samuelson/Carson/Lavender
New (5) : Jones/Mabrey/TRP/C. Ogwumike/Brown

I feel so bad for Ashley Walker. I get that she's an undersized big, but she usually performs so well in training camp but is just caught in a tough situation. There was no way she was making this team.

6 of the 14 shots she took in preseason were three pointers, so at 6’1 would it be out of line to call her a SF?

Not sure. I don't know if she's quick enough to defend SF's. She was a natural PF in college alongside Devanei Hampton.

Tweeners like that have never really been able to find a place in the league. There are exceptions, but not many.

There’s a long list of PF’s in college that have moved to a more perimeter position in the WNBA. If they can shoot the three, it certainly helps with the transition.

Thank you for posting these! I'm so happy for the rookies and in particular, am looking forward to when Marina feels really comfortable...when all the swag and confidence we saw at ND are there. She played well in the preseason but her interviews make me want to go give her a hug! I know it's a challenge just getting adjusted to a whole new life, team, etc.

Kalani and Syd sound really good and all three are ready to do what they can for the team.

My goodness this has been the year of (understandably) emphasizing how hard it is to earn a spot. The vet and rookie cuts definitely make that clear.

Vadeeva left already? No Vadeeva or Parker makes the Sparks very thin inside.

Dulling the shine on Vadeeva’s career night with the Sparks: She’s reported to the Russian national team to participate in the upcoming EuroBasket tournament, which runs through July 7 for the teams that reach the final.
