How Does The Underdog (Sun) Beat The Favorite (Mystics)?

Where should Curt Miller focus his efforts as he tries to gameplan?
On Offense. Try to simply outscore your opponent. Push tempo constantly. Hit the offensive glass. Maximize number of possessions. Defensively: slightly subdue activity and physicality, ultimately taking a possession off here and there.

On Defense. Become increasingly active and physical in defending. Commit to mixing it up constantly. Further speed up the opponent within their offense. Offensively: Don't force anything in transition; maximize your time of possessions.

On staying the course. Maintain your team's balance of energy on both ends of the floor. Avoid prioritizing one end over the other. Make only minor alterations in certain matchups and schemes based on the previous game(s).

Imagine you're Curt Miller. Looking at your personnel (aka your starters and a couple of key cogs off the bench) and the results of Game 1, you aim to adjust your coaching and give your team a winning gameplan in place for Game 2 and possibly the remainder of this series.

Should you focus more heavily on one end of the floor? Or should you have a similar balanced gameplan (arguably like you did in Game 1) with a modest amount of adjustments? As much as you'd like to do the latter, you may not see it as the winning strategy for your underdog team.

You know that Washington is more offense-oriented, as well as slower paced. What's your approach?

Poll will last until next Sunday (Game 3).

I don't think Connecticut can go all out on both ends, their rotation is too shallow for that, especially if they try to push the pace. Just try to make defensive adjustments based on last game, attempt to shut down the players who killed you (Atkins, EDD) and hope the next woman up can't fill those shoes. Make them take a lot of 3s and hope they miss a lot - they probably won't miss enough to lose, but it's as good of a plan as I can come up with.

DC is too good and this is a year tilting toward offense, especially now that they are calling it tight in the post since the Griner thing. I don't see how CT can beat them. CT is very good, but you can't defend DC. LV couldn't and they were an excellent regular season defensive team. The only way CT can win this series, barring injuries, is to average 95 ppg.

Connecticut can definitely win this series if the referees call a fair game Rolling Eyes and they get 14-18 pts from players 5 through 8 (21 pts in gm 1)...Unfortunately the officiating was a little onesided (JMO).... J.Jones also needs to play like the MVP candidate people claim she was during the regular season. I thought Jones was hesitant on offense, same goes for J.thomas. I understand that the pro EDD bias by the referees can be frustrating. But they have to maintain their composure and stay aggressive.

1. Push Tempo.

2. Control the defensive boards

3. Attack Meesseman and EDD on offense

3. Double off of Sanders

4. If Stricklen is getting killed on the defensive end, Miller can't be afraid to play Holmes, Hiedeman or Tuck...The aforementioned players scored 8 pts on 4 for 6 shooting in gm 1....After a slow start, Stricklen did score 11 of her 13 pts in the 2nd half. So she somewhat redeemed herself.

Any plan that involves refs calling fouls on EDD is doomed to failure.

The first regular season win for CT, Delle Donne didn't play. That's hard to duplicate. The second one, even though Meesseman was gone, might provide some clue. Deny Delle Donne the ball as much as possible, stay tight on the three point shooters, and win the battle on the boards.

CT won the 2nd Qtr 29-25 and the second half was 40-40. So, keep doing whatever you did in the last three quarters, and tell Jasmine Thomas to calm down. I don't think it was great defense by Washington that caused her to have a bad game. If Jasmine plays like her normal self, CT can win.

Yeah, my first point was going to be that you need Jasmine Thomas to not stink the place out. And when Washington go to gimmicky stuff like putting Sanders on her, the Sun have to be able to punish that. I don't think they necessarily have to change that much. Atkins scored 21 points on 7 shots, which isn't happening again. Maybe some smoother switching defensively, but they were in it for much of last night's game. It's not like they got blown off the floor.

Even though I’m screaming at the refs like a lunatic, my players can’t let the refs get inside their heads and let calls affect their play.

Connecticut's offense is not the problem. AT and CWill seem to score at will so keep going to them over and over. Yeah JT needs to not suck for them to have success but I would concentrate on the defensive side of the ball. When all the Washington perimeter players are hitting their outside shots, it's really a problem, maybe insurmountable. But you can hope Cloud has one of her 1-5 days, or that Toliver or Atkins have a bad day from out there so that you can pack it in more on EDD. You have to find someone that you can play off of, at least a little bit.

And really, you EDD haters are too much. Does she get away with fouling sometimes? Yeah. Do other stars get away with fouling sometimes? Yeah. So if you want the refs to call every ticky tack, realize that in this game AT is probably the first to foul out. And do you really want to watch a game with 50 fouls called and half the starters on the bench in foul trouble?

There have three finals games in WNBA history with 50+ fouls called. The most recent, and the record holder, was the atrocity of Game Two in 2011. That game saw 56 fouls called (21 in the fourth quarter, none of them end-of-the-game-stop-the-clock fouls).

At this late point in the season, aside from the normal in-game, on-the-fly adjustments that always need to be made, teams should just be what they are and stick with the strategic offense and defense that has gotten them this far. If it's enough to win, it will; if not, not. There's no magic, and even if there were, it's equally available to the other side.

I doubt the Mystics are going to shoot 70% in a quarter again.

One thing the Sun could a little, but not as a major minutes thing ...
is play Holmes and Stricklen at the 2 forward spots at the same time.
Holmes at least is the right size for Atkins + Powers + Cloud, maybe harass Meesseman's handle.
Stricklen can be partially hidden against Cloud or Sanders.
Clearly just a during backup rotations, but even a few minutes rest for AT and Jonq, is gonna be needed.
