Bull. The majority of bad WNBA coaches have been women. History shows male WNBA are better and more successful.

The men have generally been far more experienced, thanks to the greater opportunity afforded to them. No woman would ever get the chance to lose as many games as Dan Hughes has. They certainly wouldn't get the opportunity to coach a good team with a record like his. Fred Williams will get a 4th head coaching job before several women with better records get a second one.

Yeah, I figure Williams may be headed to Chicago since he said he wasn’t done.

The other issue with Stocks is that she was the GM. She put the team together and was not winning.

Chicago has had two star players - Sylvia Fowles and Elena Delle Donne - force trades. The team cannot afford to be mired in mediocrity.

Fowles left during the Pokey administration and Delle Donne left at the same time the Stocks administration started. Stocks shouldn’t take the heat for either of those.

Now if you want to blame her for getting the lottery pick that led to DeShields acquisition by trading away McGee-Stafford and Tamera Young, then go ahead.

It seems to me that the biggest issue for Stocks was that she'd never been in charge before she came to Chicago -- and suddenly she was GM and coach.

There's a big difference between being in the first seat on the bench and standing up and running a game, and it takes adjustment. I don't think the ideal place for that kind of learning is the WNBA, but you never can tell. Some coaches make the change without a hitch; others struggle with the new role, and not necessarily just with Xs and Os. All of a sudden, the former good cop assistant is now the bad cop in charge, and the relationship structures are completely different.

Then add in negotiating contracts, dealing with more of the business side, etc. ...

I think it was reasonable to fire Stocks, but a case could have been made to give her one more year as well. There are obviously a lot of issues we don't know anything about, positive and negative.

With the amount of people these small WNBA teams employ on the business side, I wouldn’t expect a GM to have to deal with any of it. The Sky have a CEO, a CRO (chief revenue officer), a CFO, a Vice President, 5 Directors, an Executive Director, and 3 Managers listed on their staff directory.

I'm not sad. I'm just trying to brighten Amber's day. I want to give her some happy feelings. She might need some happy feelings custom made by me.

I wonder if she pissed someone off because this firing was too soon. She should've been given another season at least. I'll say this though, I'll definitely miss seeing her on the sidelines. Crying or Very sad

The first name I want to throw out there for the new head coach of Sky is David Blatt.

I actually thought Stocks' GM'ing was fine to good... Idea

Must have been a coaching issue? But, even then, it definitely was a quick hook... Usually when other franchises do this, they already have someone else in mind lined up, or maybe they'll pull a NYL and just re-hire her like they did with Laimbeer Twisted Evil

SEA passed on her too... Evil or Very Mad

But, I was also expecting it... When offered the choice for a good post or a good guard, the master of 3-guard lineups Dan Hughes always goes for the guard... even if he isn't technically the GM Twisted Evil

Chicago management probably wasn't too thrilled about who Stocks planned on taking in the upcoming draft....I find it odd how Stocks was fired just 3 Days after representing the Sky at the draft lottery.

Why does Pokey still have hers? Indy must be too focused on the e-League (or whatever they call it) to worry about the WNBA.

Maybe Borders leaned on them to keep her. It would look bad if all the black coaches got fired and none of the white ones.

What about the quick firing of women coaches compared to men?

Is that something you can demonstrate graphically?

Stocks lost her job because the Sky was the worst defensive team two years in a row. The team barely improved from last season.

In response to women coaches. Opinion: Minnesota, Phoenix, and Atlanta all have very good women coaches

Though Hughes was gifted an elite, MVP-caliber superstar PF/C from Reeve for the low price of nothing, so it was worth figuring this might be the last great chance to get a young PG successor to Bird, just in case she doesn't play beyond the age of 45. Smile

Indiana is going through an obvious multi-year rebuild so Pokey must've been given a longer time-period before the team is expected to contend again (trust the process?).

Stocks would still have her job if Delle Donne hadn’t demanded a trade before she coached a game. And she’d probably be still there if Breland didn’t leave in free agency. Stocks may have figured in Breland’s decision. It also didn’t help that Quigley and Vandersloot played in leagues that had them missing the start of the season each year. It could also be that Stocks didn’t click with her boss.

Now that Stocks is gone whoever will be the new head coach will have their own perspective on what the Sky needs to improve as a team. So everyone can throw their favorite college players back into the recycle bin and start over. The new coach will think outside the box and do something different and unexpected.

Don't be a negative Nancy. The Sky ownership have been in the league long enough to know they should hire someone before the college basketball season starts.

The Mystics once waited so long to name a coach that they were the subject of an April Fool's joke.

Are you kidding me? With Chelsea and CP3 completing so many circus dimes? They simply need to retool with another defensive post and an athletic wing to replace Alana if she chooses to retire or to be groomed as a replacement if she sticks around for another year.

I watched the LAKERS back when they had Worthy, Kareem, and Magic. The current Sparks are Slowtime not Showtime. Laughing

Even an experienced coach like Thibault knows the odds of rebuilding a team very quickly are very low. That’s why he made a long term commitment a condition of his employment.

Quote:
“I needed to know from them that there was a commitment going forward that this was gonna be a long-term commitment on both sides . . . that they want this to be a successful franchise,” Thibault said.

Chicago needs a good coach that looks forward ten years, not one or two years in the future.
