Question for anyone. How many times during WNBA history has a team with the number one pick in the draft not picked the best senior college player of the year?

In 2015, Loyd was a junior.
Lauren Jackson was an international player her draft year.
“Best senior college player of the year” is pretty subjective (an opinion).

So the frequency is once every blue moon.

The draft lottery to be held August 28 during semifinals.
Get to know who has #1 early this year!

This could be one of those years, and not because Ionescu declares though that would throw a wrench in the works, but rather because as I think will be debated heavily in this thread for the next 7 months with this class who is the best senior?

If the odds hold true:
1. Indiana - Kalani Brown
2. Las Vegas - Katie Lou Samuelson
3. Chicago - Teaira McCowan
4. New York - Napheesa Collier
5. Dallas - Asia Durr
6. Minnesota - Arike Ogunbowale
7. Los Angeles - Eziyoda Magbagor
8. Phoenix - Jessica Shepard
9. Connecticut - Brianna Turner
10. Washington - Megan Gustafson
11. Atlanta - Kristine Anigwe
12. Seattle - Sophie Cunningham
Corrected for my late-night brain fart. God Vegas is gonna be fucking good in 3 years.

Other than the order screw-up (refer to the first post in thread), a lot better than Megdal’s. You have to wonder about anybody who would put Mabrey or Mariya Moore in the first round with these names available.
I have to keep driving home the point that the Lynx need frontline help. Don’t be surprised if Brunson decides to call it quits. Even if she doesn’t, posts are a major weakness in this squad. When Brunson went down, they ended relying a #35 pick (who admittedly stepped up in the last game) and an unwanted player on 7 day contracts. So in this first round of nice posts, the Lynx should draft a post. They can find some really nice guards early in the second with their three picks in that round.
Wright is probably coming back with a guaranteed contract, seeing as how badly Reeve wanted her. DRob is already signed and coming back. Zandalasini can play guard. Maya can play guard. She does in Euroleague. The Lynx have the rights to about a half dozen international guards, a couple of which may be decent. They have no rights to overseas posts that I know of.
Reeve has been futility throwing money and draft picks at the guard position and not getting her money’s worth, while practically giving away young vet posts. It’s gotta STOP. It’s time to invest in a post player with the first round pick.

Arike will be a star Lynx would be dumb to pass her up for slow/injury prone post players.

Best guard for Minnesota - Ogunbowale. Best post - Gustafson. Augustus & Brunson will likely make 2019 their final year. Wright as well. Reeve finally decided to work with Fagbenle and develop her just in time for the playoffs. Guess it all comes down to what FAs Reeve can bring in before the draft.

Hopefully Magbegor gets enough minutes in the FIBA WC to do some evaluations. On YouTube she looks like a nice Howard-like defensive presence. Jackson and Brondello talk like she’s the next big thing. I find her intriguing as a WNBA prospect, but would Reeve have patience with such a young player? Patience might be a word Reeve has to add to her vocabulary.

You’re benching the ROY? |
When she is a career 38.9 shooter overall and 28.5 from three, yes. |
And Diggins-Smith was only 29.7% (51-172) from 3 in 2018 (30.7 career). |
Diggins shot 35 percent from three last year, but 29.7 percent this year.
Diggins is also 3rd in the WNBA in assists per game - 6.2 apg.
Gray shot 29.9 percent from three last year and dropped to 27.0 percent from three this year. And, unlike Diggins, she does not rank in the top three in a major offensive category - playmaking.
Gray also got the line 37 times less this year than last.
Gray is a shooting guard. If she cannot shoot from distance - one of Dallas's biggest weaknesses - and if she is not making it up at the free throw line or really contributing a lot in other statistics, why shouldn't a 15-19 team replace her in the starting lineup?

If the lynx aren’t getting mccowan or brown it makes zero sense to pass up a clutch ready to help right away player like Ogunbowale for posts that are complete question marks.
Too bad stevens declared last draft.

Somebody doesn’t like Dallas or Phoenix.
No Magbegor? Can the Lynx pick her up in the second round? At that price, the Lynx can afford to be patient. |
I’m going by team need, and fit, every year someone goes where people don’t think they should, I don’t think this year will be any different. Most people are sleeping on Mabrey, but she had to play out of position this year, and still had a decent year, her defense isn’t bad, and she can be used as a 2nd playmaker something Dallas could use. I also like the fearlessness she plays with, it’s almost like Diggins was in college. For a Phoenix team who needs a power forward, Robinson would be a good pick up who doesn’t have to be asked to score to make an impact, Turner could be taken here but she still has a lot to prove, I was never that impressed with her. |
