The song was originally written for Franklin, and she released her version in 1970.

It’s included in her “essential” playlist..but that isn’t the song I’d choose to remember Aretha by. (Although, maybe it was played a lot by the person who wrote that tweet.)

Aretha has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. One of the best vocalists ever.

She was always the exception to. Rollingstone and other big music critics have a tendency to exclude minorities and women when it comes to music. Aretha was always given the credit she deserved. (For example, Rolling Stone only listed one woman in the top 15, and less than 20 total, in their list of greatest singers of all time. Aretha was ranked #1. You’re something special when you can crash through glass ceilings.)

I remember hearing an interview, a million years ago, of Dusty talking about Aretha's version. She made a point of conveying her love of, and, it seemed to me at the time, envy, of AF's phrasing of the line "who could ever reach me".

"The only boy, WHO could ever reach me....". DS repeatedly mentioned this, and even sang both. She said something like, "I sang it pretty straight, like this...., but Aretha changed it and made it better".

I don't mean to derail the discussion about her accomplishments, but it's now widely reported that she left no will or trust or other directive regarding her $80M estate, despite the cancer diagnosis hanging over her head. She apparently had some unusual ideas about managing her money, as she demanded to be paid in cash before each concert and wouldn't go onstage until the money was in her hands. She then turned around and paid her staff in cash and everything was done under the table.

She has 4 children, and apparently Michigan state law says her estate will be split between them equally, but I bet there are attorneys, as well as the IRS, salivating over this.

Aretha Franklin's family says pastor's eulogy was offensive, distasteful

Quote:
The remarks delivered in Detroit by Rev. Jasper Williams Jr. on Friday were met with wide criticism on social media and now by the family of the “Queen of Soul,” with nephew Vaughn Franklin telling The Associated Press that they considered it to be offensive and distasteful.

Quote:
He said his remarks about black women being incapable of raising sons alone were taken out of context. In the eulogy Williams described the idea of children being raised without a "provider" father and a mother as the "nurturer" as "abortion after birth."

Franklin was a single mother to four children and many interpreted his remarks as a dig toward the singer.

"Here's the root of what I've been talking about: In order to change America, we must change black America's culture," he said. "We must do it through parenting. In order for the parenting to go forth, it has to be done in the home. The home."

But on Monday Vaughn Franklin said the family expected a proper eulogy that concentrated on his aunt's life.

Williams' spokesman said in a statement Monday evening that Williams respects the family's opinion and that he's sorry they feel that way.

A reference to the big bow hat she wore during Obama's 2009 inauguration!

Notice the Martin Luther King, Jr. character leading the choir...

Aretha and former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan passed away on the same week...

One year after her death, Aretha Franklin's cancer doctors recall her grace, grit

Quote:
"As a person, she was extremely kind, she was respectful, she was funny — she treated people like me and my team members as her friends," said Dr. Manisha Shah of Ohio State University. "There is no phone call that would end without her asking about us. Most of the time she would ask about us first. ... It's because who she was: She was really down-to-earth."

Quote:
"I think she had her priorities very clear in her mind. ... She would ask me how long this treatment would go for, what would be her restrictions," Shah said. "As far as I can see, she was able to live that dream, or her plan."

Quote:
"She was full speed — she wasn't even complaining," said Philip, who first saw Franklin in early 2011 and was her doctor of record at the time of her death. "That was different than what I expected. ... She never showed signs that she was close to thinking that she may give up ... until the end, close to the end."
