The greatest singer EVER. My heart is about to be completely broken. I can't imagine the number of dignitaries who will show up to honor her when her sun sets.

She did it all at the greatest level (R&B, Rock, Opera, Jazz, Gospel, Pop, etc.).

I love that lady and will miss her rudeness. Laughing

I haven’t heard a voice yet that can touch her Falcon Soprano in her early days. I hope she pulls through but if she doesn’t I pray she go easy and rest peacefully. You are so appreciated and loved Aretha.

Not a week goes by I do not listen to at least one of her songs. Simply the greatest female singer of my life.

Peace and comfort to her, family, friends and thank you for bringing joy to millions of people around the world.

DETROIT (WJBK) - Fans and celebrities across the world are saying prayers for Aretha Franklin as news has come out that she is gravely ill.

Monday night, to a crowd of more than 40,000 people, Beyonce fittingly dedicated her concert with husband Jay Z in Detroit to The Queen of Soul. Detroit is Aretha's hometown, and where she is currently at home surrounded by loved ones.

"She stepped right up at the beginning of the concert and dedicated it to her, and [we're] hoping and praying that Aretha makes it," concertgoer Selam Sanders said.

The Queen is at home in the care of hospice. They are making sure she is comfortable for her transition.

Last Call: Aretha Franklin, an underrated pianist

Quote:
Tributes will pour in surely, but I wanted to point out that while her voice is unparalleled, her virtuosity on the piano is severely underrated. Those who knew Franklin called her “a child prodigy” on the keys, who knew how to play fully formed, lush gospel chords without being taught how to voice them. Watch her perform with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra from 2015 and be blown away. (Go to 7:11 of video below).

“I treasured every moment that we spent together, from working in the recording studio to performing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial or simply hanging in the kitchen, and I will miss her dearly,” Jones added. “R.I.P. Ree-Ree. You will reign as the Queen forever.”

“From the time that Dinah Washington first told me that Aretha was the ‘next one’ when she was 12 years old until the present day, Aretha Franklin set the bar upon which every female singer has and will be measured,” Jones wrote. “And she did it with the professionalism, class, grace and humility that only a true Queen could.”

Same day as Elvis. Shocked

I would hope that we could take the occasion of Aretha Franklin’s passing to remember as Americans who we are and what we can be.

Not religious nor an Apple fanboy but I thought this was a moving sentiment from Tim Cook.

We mourn the passing of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. Her voice will keep lifting us, through the music she gave the world. Our thoughts are with her family, her loved ones and fans everywhere. Take her hand, precious Lord, and lead her home. 🎶

Dionne Warwick
"Our Heavenly Father has chosen one of our most prolific voices to join His Heavenly Choir...............Aretha now rests in peace!!.....I, like I'm sure she was taught, that we are All put on this earth for a purpose, and once that is fulfilled, we will then be 'Called Home'! She sincerely will be missed throughout the Musical World, Family, and Friends. My deep heartfelt condolence I send from my family to her family and do hope the grief I know they are feeling will begin to subside with time, as losing a family member is a VERY HARD THING to process. Know that her pain is over and she suffers no longer! Rest in Peace my Friend."

Some unintended levity from someone (who shall remain nameless) on Twitter.

Farewell to the one and only Aretha Franklin. Truly the Queen of Soul. What a sad loss. Son of a Preacher Man is ringing in my ears.

Laughing

Also, incredibly, king of the Delta blues Robert Johnson, seminal icon considered to be the father of blues (and rock) guitar also died on August 16th.

The wondrous chorus of America at its best has lost a powerful voice. Aretha Franklin shook the heavens and our own complacency with her spirit and by tackling life with power and purpose. #Respect
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) August 16, 2018

"This morning, my longest friend in this world went home to be with our father. I will miss her so much, but I know she’s at peace."
-Smokey Robinson

Tony Bennett
‏It was a double thrill for me to perform on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera on my 85th birthday and have the Queen of Soul (and heart) Aretha Franklin singing with me....she will be missed by the world.

Gloria Estefan: "For as long as I can remember, Aretha Franklin has been the absolute zenith, the guiding light, the master for any girl that aspired to sing or even just appreciated someone at the top of their game. I was blessed to have sung with her on more than one occasion and each time I felt that I was in the presence of musical royalty that would forever raise the bar and set the standard. Long live the Queen of Soul through her extraordinary & singular voice and her indelible music. "

Bonnie Raitt wrote an extremely lengthy essay, which said, in part, "I am so saddened by the loss of our beloved Queen of Soul, Aretha. She has always been my favorite and the greatest singer I’ve ever heard. Along with Ray Charles, she has been the most influential artist in my life. She brought the raw passion and beauty of gospel and the deepest blues, irrepressible rhythm to every note she sang."

Bonnie added, "I learned [from her]...most of what I still know about men, love, strength and vulnerability in the face of loss and betrayal; about the deep well of spirit and surrender to a higher purpose, including standing up for oneself and demanding respect....She gave us the raw power and dimension of what a real, ’natural’ woman could be."

Billy Joel said, "We've lost the greatest singer of our time."We have lost the greatest singer of our time. As a songwriter, I know personally how meaningful a gifted interpreter of material can be. No one can replace her. - Billy Joel

Brian Wilson, of the Beach Boys, called her one of the greatest and most emotional singers and said he used to love listening to her music in the 60s.I’m very sad to hear about Aretha Franklin passing. She was one of the greatest and most emotional singers. I used to love listening to her in the sixties but her music is timeless. Love & Mercy to Aretha’s family and friends.

lol. Okay. I’m absolutely not surprised she covered Son of a Preacher Man. Would have been surprised if she hadn’t. But this is like remarking upon Elvis’s death that ‘My Way’ is ringing in your ears. Of course, this guy could be exactly like some personality type we know so well and cleverly trolling everyone on Twitter. That too would not be a surprise. It’s still funny.

The song was originally written for Franklin, and she released her version in 1970.

It’s included in her “essential” playlist..but that isn’t the song I’d choose to remember Aretha by. (Although, maybe it was played a lot by the person who wrote that tweet.)

Aretha has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. One of the best vocalists ever.

She was always the exception to. Rollingstone and other big music critics have a tendency to exclude minorities and women when it comes to music. Aretha was always given the credit she deserved. (For example, Rolling Stone only listed one woman in the top 15, and less than 20 total, in their list of greatest singers of all time. Aretha was ranked #1. You’re something special when you can crash through glass ceilings.)

Matt Guitar Murphy was the boyfriend in that famous scene.

His death 2 months ago was noted here but, sadly, no one seemed to care. Evil or Very Mad

Quote:
“My memories of having Aretha around the house is that she would get upset that we didn’t have a piano," Mavis Staples tells Billboard over email. "And she was a piano lady. I told her, ‘Well, Aretha, we have plenty of guitars.’ And she would say, ‘Mavis, get out of my face -- you know I don’t play no guitar!’ It was just a fun time. She always had stories, and we always wanted to hear them.”

The singers later collaborated on Franklin’s 1987 gospel album, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. “That was one of the best experiences of my life,” she says. “I had always wanted to sing with Re, and that was the time we did. It was at her father’s church, and it was just a beautiful experience. We did ‘Oh Happy Day,’ and two others that didn't come out. I think they still have them on the shelf somewhere, and hopefully they'll release them.”

Despite Franklin's legendary status in the music world, Staples remembers Franklin as “just everyday people like everyone else.”

“She liked soul food -- greens and cornbread,” Staples says. “She was a regular person who just happened to very talented.”

The song was originally written for Franklin, and she released her version in 1970.

It’s included in her “essential” playlist..but that isn’t the song I’d choose to remember Aretha by. (Although, maybe it was played a lot by the person who wrote that tweet.)

Interesting that the song written for the greatest female vocalist wound up being made famous by perhaps the greatest white female vocalist. Both did a wonderful rendition, but I prefer Dusty. On the other hand, there are about 10 other songs (from Mockingbird to This Girl's in Love With You) and I couldn't find another song where I didn't prefer Aretha. So sad to have Aretha pass, and sad to remember that Dusty has been gone for nearly 20 years.

Aretha never thought the song was right for her until she heard her sister sing it.

IMO, Aretha was right the first time. This song isn't quite right for her. I like Erma's version better than Aretha's, and Dusty's better than either of them.

While Aretha was multi-decadal, she will always be remembered by me as one of the superstars of the greatest music (and everything else) decade -- the 60's.

RIP.

'You Are Not Going to Disrespect Her': Why Aretha Franklin Insisted on Being Paid in Cash

Quote:
The policy was well-documented. In 2016, The New Yorker’s David Remnick went backstage at a Franklin gig and noticed that there were stacks of cash near her hairbrush and mirror. He soon learned that Franklin had a rule: “She collects on the spot or she does not sing.” She would stash the money in her purse, then give it to her security guards or keep it with her onstage for the duration of her performance.

According to Franklin’s friend Tavis Smiley, there was a reason for this. Franklin’s cash-only process stemmed from her observations of the music business during her early days, when black singers were underpaid and often cheated out of royalties.

“It’s the era she grew up in—she saw so many people, like Ray Charles and B. B. King, get ripped off,” Smiley told The New Yorker. “There is the sense in her very often that people are out to harm you. And she won’t have it. You are not going to disrespect her.”
