Wilson leads all rookies in points per game, total rebounds per game, field goals made per game, free throws made per game, offensive rebounds per game, defensive rebounds per game, and blocks per game.
She is also second among rookies in assists per game.
I am curious, though, as to board posters who voted for other players. Was this done based on being a fan of another player or another team? Or was it based on true belief that said other player deserves to be the Rookie of the Year?

Five rookies - Wilson, Mitchell, DeShields, Nurse, and Atkins - are averaging double digit points per game. This has not happened since 2006 (Augustus, Pondexter, Dupree, Young, Currie).
Wilson is averaging 20.1 ppg. The last time a rookie averaged over 20 ppg was 2006 (Augustus).
What stood out for me were a few things regarding Wilson.
-- Overall, she is averaging 20.1 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.5 bpg, while shooting 45.4 percent from the floor and 76.9 percent from the line.
-- Watching Wilson, she has been more willing to take jumpers outside of the paint. Not all are falling, but her form looks good. Developing this mid-range jumper and using it consistently (whether from the baseline, the free throw line, etc.) will only help her.
-- Wilson's 2.3 assists per game is pretty impressive for a rookie post player (especially against 1.5 turnovers, for an A/TO ratio of 1.533).
-- Wilson leads the entire WNBA in free throw attempts per game (8.1) and made free throws per game (6.2). Even bumping up her percentage from the line to 82-83 percent will make her that much more formidable.
-- She is top five in the WNBA in points and rebounds per game. By my count, the last rookie to do that was Candace Parker (2008). |
And this is what I posted on July 18, 2018 (adding in a few notes and a correction on one of the years - 2001, instead of 2000):

This year, seven rookies are averaging at least 8.5 ppg, with four players averaging double digit points per game:
Code: |
Name PPG
Wilson 19.9 ppg
DeShields 13.4 ppg
KMitchell 13.1 ppg
Atkins 11.4 ppg
Nurse 8,8 ppg
Vivians 8.6 ppg
Stevens 8.5 ppg |
Excluding 1997-1999 (and how WNBA.com characterizes "rookies" for those years), how does this compare to the PPG outputs for prior WNBA rookie classes?
2001
5 players averaging at least 10 ppg (with all five at 11.0 ppg or more), 7 players averaging at least 8.3 ppg
2006
5 players averaged at least 10 ppg (with four at 12.0 ppg or more), but no one else over 7.5 ppg; but two players averaged at least 19 ppg
2008
3 players averaged at least 10.5 ppg, 7 players averaged at least 8.0 ppg
2012
4 players averaged at least 10.5 ppg, 6 players averaged at least 8.0 ppg
2014
4 players averaged at least 10.5 ppg, 6 players averaged at least 8.3 ppg |
As of today (August 6, 2018):
Code: |
Name PPG
Wilson 20.5 ppg
DeShields 13.6 ppg
KMitchell 12.8 ppg
Atkins 11.1 ppg
Stevens 8.6 ppg
Vivians 8.5 ppg
Nurse 8.4 ppg |
-- 7 rookies are averaging 8.4 ppg, which would be the most in league history (again, not including or accounting for 1997-99 and how rookies were characterized then).
-- Wilson is averaging 20.5 ppg. The last time a rookie averaged over 20 ppg was 2006 (Augustus, 21.9 ppg).
-- Wilson is 4th in the entire WNBA in PPG and 3rd in RPG. The last rookie to be in the top five in the WNBA in points and rebounds per game was Candace Parker (2008).
-- Wilson is 5th in the entire WNBA in BPG. The last rookie to be in the top five in the WNBA in points, rebounds, and blocks per game was Candace Parker (2008).
-- Wilson is second among rookies in APG (2.6 apg). Jordin Canada leads all rookies in assists per game, with 3.1. But Wilson is a rookie post player who is also sporting an A/TO of 1.73, which is pretty great for any post player, but pretty phenomenal for a rookie post player.
