Last week — specifically, July 22 — marked the 10-year anniversary of one the WNBA’s most embarrassing and disgraceful moments... Rolling Eyes

Shows the difference in fan bases between sports. It was a fight between two drivers at the Daytona 500 in 1979 that put NASCAR on the map.

The Harding-Kerrigan episode has also been credited as a boon to ladies figure skating.

Of course, in Hockey fights are almost expected and only get you a trip to the penalty box.

I hate seeing this. This fight basically caused the end of Cheryl Ford's career.

This fight wasn't considering to be a benefit to the NBA.

Actually, it was one of the WNBA’s best moments. It made a lot of people take notice of the league, even if it wasn’t really for the right reasons. For the WNBA, any publicity is good publicity.

My favorite thing about that is still Bobbit in the background. Laughing

Watched the game that day and the YouTube video just now and that’s honestly all I could think about. This game/fight was the end which is absolutely heart wrenching.

Well, I did call it an episode, not a fight..... Wink

BTW - Google trends shows that WNBA interest from 2004-present hit a peak in July 2008, and didn't exceed that level of interest until June 2016. Most of that time it was far below the July 2008 level. The good news is that it appears interest in 2018 is higher than ever.

Interest in the league was very high in 2013 with the "3 to see".

Yes it was embarrassing but, if you look at the film you would see that Parker started the whole thing. She hooked Pleanete in the arm and pulled her down. Watch LA even today and they still hook players on the other team and pull them down. I know other players on other teams do the same thing but that year Parker was(and still is in some folks eyes) the darling of the W. She should have gotten the 4 day suspension because she started the whole thing.

Parker didn't start anything it was a legal box out arms got tangled both fell if you look at it Parker was getting up when Pierson stood over her to throw a punch. Parker had every right to defend herself

Off topic somewhat but I'll always remember that fight for a different reason. I took my first trip to DC to see the Libs play the next morning. My buddy and I were going to the game and we had a 5:30 am train (the game was a camp day game). I'm struggling to fall asleep and finally do during that game. I left the TV on with it on in the background. The fight woke me up and I couldn't get back to sleep for anything. I was kind of surprised but knew it would probably lead on SportsCenter when otherwise the WNBA would catch the back end of SportsCenter. Not to mention I rolled back the fight about 12 times to see whose fault it was. I put about 3/4 of it on Pierson because it seemed like that time of circumstance was somewhat commonplace for her back then.

I drank about 6-8 energy drinks that day. Luckily back then I was young enough that I didn't have any health complications as a result. I've now sworn off energy drinks. Especially on days when the Libs play. At my age with my personality we could be talking serious health consequences on game days.
