Her proposition of ending air travel and replacing it with high-speed rail is nothing short of comedic gold. I can't wait to see the plans / cost estimate for such an ambitious project!

I don't see "bug-eyed", but she seems to get a "crazy eyes" look from time to time.

According to her Wikipedia entry, Ocasio-Cortez graduated from Boston University cum laude with a double major: International Relations and Economics. Economists seem ardent capitalists, but Wikipedia does have a list of socialist economists and political economists.

Scott Adams, who says he has studied persuasion and talks about it with regard to Trump and other politicians, calls Ocasio-Cortez a "master persuader".

Watching her, I get the feeling that she has been in Congress for years. She is confident, to the point and easy to listen to. She doesn't use a lot of uhs and ums that are so distracting. So poised!

I'm still shaking my head that this is only her 2nd MONTH!!!! In any elected position!!! Wow!!!

The GOP must be losing sleep trying to figure out haw they are going to deal with her for the next 40-50 years!

Anddd....that's GOOD, right? Though not always.....

I can think of a few "Master Persuaders": Jesus Christ, Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jim Jones, Charles Manson, Fox News....some are forces of good, some are forces of evil.

You haven’t noticed yet? They spread misinformation about her or her policies. Whether the misinformation is in the form of blatant lies or stupidity, it’s hard to tell.

I may have to move to the BX so that I can vote for her!!!!! We gotta keep he in Washington!!!!

Quote:
5. Ocasio-Cortez shows up the veterans

One of the sad truths about these hearings is that, even for the members who are there to elicit information (rather than grandstand), most of them aren’t very good at it. And that’s especially the case when you only have five minutes to get something out of a witness.

Enter the chamber’s much-discussed youngest new member, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

The 29-year old’s questioning was low-key, but it actually unearthed new information. She followed up on others’ questions (a novel concept!) about topics including the ways in which Trump’s inflation of his wealth could be criminal. And she got Cohen to name three Trump Organization executives who would seem to be likely candidates for subpoenas on that point:

OCASIO-CORTEZ: Did the president ever provide inflated assets to an insurance company?

COHEN: Yes.

OCASIO-CORTEZ: Who else knows the president did this?

COHEN: Allen Weisselberg, Ron Lieberman and Matthew Calamari.

Simple but effective. She also got Cohen to name people who might know about a potential treasure trove of information about stories the National Enquirer’s parent company bought the rights to kill them to help Trump. And she laid a predicate for House Democrats to try to get Trump’s tax returns, by asking Cohen whether they would be helpful when it comes to him inflating his assets. Cohen said they would be, and that they could be found at the Trump Organization.

All of this could turn out to be useful for Democrats moving forward.

I'd go with blatant lies.

The founder of Greenpeace took a nasty shot at AOC on twitter:
Quote:
Pompous little twit. You don’t have a plan to grow food for 8 billion people without fossil fuels, or get the food into the cities. Horses? If fossil fuels were banned every tree in the world would be cut down for fuel for cooking and heating. You would bring about mass death.

Her point is that we need to get a plan for that. Fossil fuels will run out.

I don’t want this thread to be about AOC haters. You can start your own thread if you’re compelled to represent them. But this Moore guy doesn’t seem very credible.

Then you should edit the title to include something about "positive comments or links only" and maybe add something about the preferred post being what you are doing - youtube video with no accompanying text.

She's in a little do-do now. But listen. We all still love her.

Payments to corporation owned by Ocasio-Cortez aide come under scrutiny

Washington Post

By Michelle Ye Hee Lee

March 5 at 8:22 PM

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.)’s chief of staff helped establish two political action committees that paid a corporation he ran more than $1 million in 2016 and 2017, federal campaign finance records show.

Brand New Congress LLC, the corporation owned by Saikat Chakrabarti, was also paid $18,880 for strategic consulting by Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional campaign in 2017, records show. The following year, he worked as a volunteer to manage her campaign, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The arrangement, first reported by conservative outlets, left hidden who ultimately profited from the payments — a sharp juxtaposition with Ocasio-Cortez’s calls for transparency in politics. She has called dark money “the enemy to democracy.”

The money that flowed to her chief of staff’s corporation have subjected the first-term congresswoman to critics’ charges of hypocrisy.

Quote:
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., did a masterful job interrogating former Donald Trump attorney Michael Cohen during the House Oversight Committee hearing — and in so doing, underscored an inherent rhetorical problem with how members of Congress interview witnesses.

Quote:
Ocasio-Cortez (and perhaps a few others) were the exception to the rule during the Feb. 27 hearing. She practiced argument as inquiry. Her questions were probative and focused on discovery, setting up future lines of inquiry, obtaining new information, and discerning additional witnesses who might testify. Unlike others, hers was not an exercise in self-promotion.

AOC is not the future of the Democratic party. The party will always be split as long as there is a push for any sort of someone's idea of socialism, democratic socialism or otherwise. I am a centrist democrat, (more centrist) and I would never vote for her at all.

Are you saying Sanders can’t win either? This is the second time you’ve gone in on AOC, but I haven’t seen you say anything about him. Maybe you don’t like strong minority women?

Richard 77 wrote:

Hey, join the party. Isn’t the definition of “centrist” the policies that are the most popular with the majority of the people? She wants Medicare for all, advocates for a living wage, and a fossil fuel-free future.... terrible stuff like that. Don’t worry, she’s not interested in your prized trading card. If you believe that, you’re susceptible to fear mongering.

She’s a bit out of your district. Are you talking about for President? Would you rather vote for somebody like Pence?

AOC and the far left plays an essential role in Democratic politics, and even for centrists the emergence of AOC and that wing of the party is a very good thing. For too long it was allowed to be sidelined through ridiculous GOP narratives and Cold War/Red Scare ideology. And the party and America as a whole was the lesser for it.

First off, it keeps the party progressing forward with new ideas. Moderates shouldn't be expected to suddenly embrace Socialism, but if pushing for Medicaid-for-All gets us a public option in Obamacare (something we should have had in the beginning) or pushing for free college gets us free 2 year trade and community colleges and less student debt, that would be a huge win for moderates.

Secondly, when there is an actual far left, it makes it very hard for the GOP to brand moderates as "Socialists". I mean, imagine calling Obama or Klobuchar a socialist when there are people to actually contrast them to. It keeps things in perspective and grounded closer to reality

Thirdly, it gives people actual choices within the Democratic Party. The party should represent the beliefs of the people and the more viewpoints and the bigger the tent, the stronger the end result.

AOC embodies The Future. Her ideas push the envelope, but she cannot be dismissed as a 'nut job', cuz....she ISN'T. She's bright, eloquent, and focused AND popular with her demographic. And she isn't intimidated out of speaking to power. As more and more young, diverse citizens realize the importance of New Ideas that DON'T come from Old Rich White Guys, she and her type will flourish.

I do believe she is scary to old(er...50+) white guys. She represents the way "their" America is vanishing. And it's high time for her kind of change. Trump embodies The Past: Slimy Older White Guys that have been beholden to the almighty dollar and each other. The Middle Class is their hive of worker bees, making them richer and richer.

Bernie is less 'scary', cuz he's an Older White Guy....but one who recognizes the future and IS in touch with Middle America's needs and wants. But his ideas are not that far from AOC's. I love 'em both. Cool
