When Whalen—the winningest player in league history, on its greatest dynasty—thought about retiring in March, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve asked her to stay on. After four hours of conversation, Whalen told Reeve yes, she’d keep playing. Two weeks later Gophers coach Marlene Stollings left for Texas Tech and Whalen discussed that job offer with her husband, Ben Greve, who says, “Our conversation was, ‘How do you say no to that?’”

In a way she's just played one season too long. She still has the fire occasionally and still has the game occasionally but the conditioning isn't there and the consistency isn't there and I suspect the attention isn't there.
Hopefully her coaching stint goes well for her. She's definitely been a great in our game.

This article does make it seem like she's retiring after this season.

Most things have, really, including just the way she's played. Gonna be interesting to see what Minnesota do at the point. Don't think Robinson/Jones have done enough to make it any kind of certainty that they'll just promote them up a spot in the order and carry on. |

Just a wild guess, but I'm betting Reeve won't be spending 4 hours trying to talk Whalen into coming back next season.

She really needs to announce her retirement for her fans.

Didn’t appear as though she entered the season in the best condition either.
