Five rookies - Wilson, Mitchell, DeShields, Nurse, and Atkins - are averaging double digit points per game. This has not happened since 2006 (Augustus, Pondexter, Dupree, Young, Currie).

Wilson is averaging 20.1 ppg. The last time a rookie averaged over 20 ppg was 2006 (Augustus).

What stood out for me were a few things regarding Wilson.

-- Overall, she is averaging 20.1 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.5 bpg, while shooting 45.4 percent from the floor and 76.9 percent from the line.

-- Watching Wilson, she has been more willing to take jumpers outside of the paint. Not all are falling, but her form looks good. Developing this mid-range jumper and using it consistently (whether from the baseline, the free throw line, etc.) will only help her.

-- Wilson's 2.3 assists per game is pretty impressive for a rookie post player (especially against 1.5 turnovers, for an A/TO ratio of 1.533).

-- Wilson leads the entire WNBA in free throw attempts per game (8.1) and made free throws per game (6.2). Even bumping up her percentage from the line to 82-83 percent will make her that much more formidable.

-- She is top five in the WNBA in points and rebounds per game. By my count, the last rookie to do that was Candace Parker (2008).

After opening the season 1-7, the Aces have gone 4-3 in their last seven games behind the brilliant play of rookie forward A’ja Wilson. The 2018 No. 1 overall pick joins the 2013 No. 1 overall pick (Brittney Griner) as the only players to rank in the top five in both scoring and rebounding this far into the season.

It's another indication of how important to for teams to get No. 1 picks. The gap between No. 1 and No. 2 is enormous in most years.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the 8 of the top 11 scorers in the league are former No. 1 picks, and that group includes neither Candace Parker nor Nneka Oguwumike.

On the bright side, your team got arguably the greatest player in league history at #3. So at least it's not always true.

True. Though the player who might be better is league history was selected first in the same draft.

And of course there were extenuating circumstances that caused her to drop to #3. It wasn't a normal #3 pick.

Id hate to be bibb...you deliver the talent but cant get a successful motivator. Then have to worry about possibly your most consistent player not coming back due to personal ties. Poor Bibb

Anne Donovan wanted to take Catchings #2 for Charlotte, but ownership was pressuring her to take someone who could play right away.

Funny how similar it is to the NBA draft that introduced the generally-considered-GOAT:
#1 All-time Legend
#2 Dear god what were you thinking
#3 Arguable Greatest Ever

Not a perfect parallel, but oddly close.
