Here’s CBS Sports’ take on the season.
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2018-wnba-award-predictions-maya-moore-for-mvp-lynx-sparks-primed-for-finals-rematch/
MVP: Maya Moore, Lynx
Quote: |
It's never a bad idea to go with the best women's basketball player on the planet. |
Finally somebody that sees that Fowles is not the best player on the team. That being said, I think Fowles will cut into Maya’s scoring enough to make winning MVP unnecessary and unlikely. My early call is Delle Donne. If she can stay healthy for most of the season, she’ll be an even bigger go-to player with Meesseman out. Griner is another good candidate looking to win her first MVP in already her sixth year in the league.
Rookie of the Year: A'ja Wilson, Aces
Quote: |
Wilson should get plenty of opportunities to accumulate the stats that are usually necessary to take home this award. |
I agree. Canadians might be up in arms because of what happened in the preseason, but what happens in preseason stays in preseason.
Defensive Player of the Year: Brittney Griner, Mercury
Quote: |
Griner is probably the most dominant interior defender the league has ever seen. |
With her career 3.3 bpg average, she’s always in the running for this award.
Most Improved Player: Kelsey Plum, Aces
Quote: |
Three of the past four Most Improved Player Award winners have been second-year players |
Intriguing choice but will Laimbeer keep her in a position to win such a prestigious award? Probably not.
Sixth Woman of the Year: Cappie Pondexter
Quote: |
She signed in Los Angeles this offseason, and figures to be their first guard off the bench. |
This is a tough call. I’m hoping it’s one of Minnesota’s guards.
Coach of the Year: Brian Agler, Sparks
Quote: |
This could be the year he's finally rewarded for the coaching clinic he's put on the past few years. |
I’m just glad there will definitely won’t be a repeat of the mistake that was made last year. If you ask pilight, this award is like a most-improved team award, whether the coach deserves the credit or not. They also would prefer to give this award to a newer coach, so maybe Collen is in a good spot to win this award?
Final standings
Los Angeles Sparks
Minnesota Lynx
Phoenix Mercury
Connecticut Sun
Atlanta Dream
New York Liberty
Washington Mystics
Dallas Wings
Seattle Storm
Chicago Sky
Las Vegas Aces
Indiana Fever
Oh, I hope they are right (except for LAS being the #1 seed)! Teaira, come to me!
Finals prediction: Sparks over Lynx in 4
Quote: |
Sparks -- bolstered by their superior depth -- will take down the Lynx |
Geez, other than recognizing Maya as the best player in the world, this Jack Maloney seems to be a Sparks homer.
It’s actually not an unreasonable call given their quality depth and the compacted season, but I’m hoping for some cracks to form with all those personalities they have on that team (Circus West).

Liz will clearly be the MIP. She will be coming off of 5 years of doing nothing to doing something. Huge improvement.

Taurasi best guard? Come on. It's Diggins and it's not very close.

She was a number of years ago. I guess coaches and GM's put less thought into these things than basement dwellers. I'd say the same for Bird. If she is so good at making teammates better, why have the Storm been so bad the last couple seasons after winning the lottery two years in a row?
