Yeah is there any confirmation that she is going to retire ? This seems like a big deal taking over this program. Im a bit worried she might not be ready .

Looks like confirmation to me:

Yeah, big step...but they always say PG is coach on the floor. Hope she learns the politics part in a hurry.

There is nothing in there about retirement.

We know she is the Gophers new coach, the question was if she actually announced her retirement after this next season. As part of their signing of her was the agreement that she would continue to play for the Lynx.

Not sure what you mean?

I honestly don't know what the plans are for after this season. All I know is that they specifically stated that she will continue to play for the Lynx for now:

Don't panic, Lynx fans, she's still going to play for the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA. It's part of her agreement with the U of M.

/sigh.

Can someone please link this confirmation that is out there "on twiiter". I've checked her account, the Lynx account, all the stories and I have seen nothing about this.

It is very possible she plans to, but I am fairly positive nothing has been announced or even hinted at as of yet.

How long did Staley continue to play after she started coaching at Temple? I know that she stuck around long enough to play against a player she used to coach (Dupree), but how long did she stick around after that?

From the above article:

Quote:
WNBA players have simultaneously held college coaching positions in the past, including some as head coaches. Perhaps the most notable example is former WNBA great Dawn Staley, who was hired as the Temple women’s basketball coach in 2000 and held that job while also playing in the WNBA all the way through the 2006 season. Overall, she took Temple to the NCAA tournament six times in eight seasons, with four of those appearances coming while she was still an active WNBA player.

Staley started at Temple in 2000-2001. She retired from the Comets after the 2006 season.

Staley took the Temple job in 2000 and played in the WNBA through the 2006 season. She retired at the same age Whalen is now.

She interviewed for some major conference jobs before retiring, but they all insisted she stop playing before they would hire her.

Yeah, it would not surprise me if she did retire after this season, but because of her age, not her new job.

I think it will come down to how she feels after playing this year.

I think this will be her final season. Just can't see her being able to handle being a new head coach and prepping for another season with the Lynx.

No...she plans to play AND coach. How long? Who knows. But nothing has changed in that regard.

Well, that is the answer, random internet person.

People who know her are telling you that she has many admirable qualities that they feel leads her to be successful in life. Why question that other than to be an ass?

If you want specifics we can discuss her academic record, her work with multiple charities, her work in broadcasting, and getting herself hired as a coach.

Do you need references for how good of a game of scrabble she plays as well?

No, the University of Minnesota Athletic Director who just hired her - not people who know her - is telling me she has "excelled at everything she has ever done in her life".

I'd like to know what else she has excelled at - or was it just complete "hiring manager hyperbole". Why question my question so defensively - changing his words of "excelled at" to your words of "admirable qualities"? Notable that you were beside yourself when the Dallas GM promoted his hire.

Listing things she has done in her life doesn't make a case that she excelled at any of them.

Except there was no hyperbole here. He listed her qualities and said they led her to success. These qualities are well established by people who know Whalen. That she is unflappable, determined, and has a legendary work ethic, are well known and quite apt descriptors of her.

And my "Yes" was because I could also attest to those qualities from personal experiences with her back in our U of M days. She is one of the most impressive individuals I have ever met.

If, on the other hand, he had called her the "best women's basketball player in the world" I would have laughed at him as well.

But false equivalency sure is fun, huh?
