The WNBL minimum salary is $7,500 per season, and while that amount would probably apply to most bench players in the league, each team would have starters who are on significantly more so I doubt the average is only $10.6k
(Note that the exchange rate atm is approx AUD$1.00 = USD$0.73)

Yeah and if you add the stars in at much higher salaries (we assume) 10.6 seems too low. Also - I remember the Aussie Net ball numbers seemed pretty crazy too.

Melbourne vs Adelaide tips off in about 1 hour, and will be live streamed here
On current form it should be a comfortable win for Melbourne, meaning that Magbegor could see some decent minutes (assuming her hand pulled up ok after Friday's game)

Caught the last five minutes or so. What an absolute shambles that was down the stretch, culminating in Adelaide apparently not realising that they needed to foul when Melbourne started their possession up two with 25s on the game clock. All I saw of Magbegor was a really dumb foul before being benched for the final 4+ minutes. |

I didn't get to see any of it, so no comment other than being surprised that Adelaide, down one of their best players in Steph Blicavs, pushed the Boomers right to the wire in Melbourne. Melbourne must have done a lot wrong for that to happen.

Round 7
In the big game to start the round, Canberra took down Melbourne. Griffin & Nurse starred as always, with some valuable assistance from Leilani Mitchell and young PG Maddison Rocci.
Sydney are still cursed, getting blown away by Perth and losing Ally Wilson to what looked like a serious knee injury. Fingers crossed that it's not the dreaded ACL.
Dandenong got a much-needed win to keep them in the playoff hunt.
On the same day Adelaide nearly caused a major upset against Melbourne, news came that the team is in deep trouble financially.
In the TV game, Bendigo had a win stolen from their grasp by bad call in the dying seconds of regulation time, and went on to lose in OT.

You never know from the outside how much a player accepted to play somewhere, but it's odd that a team with money issues has two WNBA-level imports on their roster. Maybe their issues are at least in part because they've been trying to do things beyond their actual means. |

I know the WNBL doesn't get large crowds, but that's sad. Curious what other teams draw?

Round 8
Sydney got a win!
Bendigo were the big losers this round, getting smashed in both games. Canberra cop 2 tough losses as well to leave a mini gap below the top 2, but they will bounce back. Marianna Tolo is apparently due back next Sunday.
Adelaide put the club's bad financial news behind them and got a couple of important wins to put them on the edge of the top 4.
In the TV game, Melbourne jumped out of the blocks quickly and Townsville never quite managed to peg them back, not helped by a flare-up of Suzy Batkovic's shoulder/neck issue that forced her to the bench.
Townsville 93 (Batkovic 24p 12r 3b, Cocks 17p, Malott 13p 5r, Garbin 10p, Aokuso 9p, Madgen 4p 6a)

As I've said many times before, Nurse's game deteriorates when she tries to be the #1 option. Unfortunately, teams keep putting her in that position. In Kia's last 4 games, she has shot 4-12, 5-15, 6-21, and 4-15. Her season shooting percentages are down to 35% FG and 30% 3Pt. Kia needs to dial it back. Let your teammates carry more of the load. OK, Canberra started the year without Tolo and Mitchell so Nurse had to do more. But now, FLB is back and healthy. She's been a #1 option in Australia and is a 3-time All-Star Five (their All-League equivalent). Griffin is a two-time All-Star Five and two-time finals MVP. And now Tolo is coming back. She was All-Star Five just two years ago. From a WNBL perspective, this team is loaded. There is no reason why Nurse needs to play hero-ball anymore.

I didn't see the Adelaide-Canberra game, but in the Perth-Canberra one she wasn't playing hero ball. Nailed her first 3 threes in the first quarter, but was just inexplicably cold for the rest of the game. She wasn't putting up bad shots, they were mostly good looks that her team would want her to take. I was sitting there counting all the bullets we were dodging.
After she made her first 3, she went 0-17 from the perimeter for the rest of the weekend, which is pretty freaky.

I see that the University of Canberra has a WNBL team. Is that an all-amateur team competing with pros?

Also, random stat time:
Ezi Magbegor: 8.1 ppg (49%), 4.7 rpg
Zitina Aokuso: 8.0 ppg (44%), 5.1 rpg
I'll be interested to see what has happened to those numbers by season's end.

Interesting, I never heard of Aokuso. She's 6-4 and athletic enough to dunk, so if she's as productive or more productive than Magbegor, then she should draw interest from somebody. Aokuso's birthday is November 23, 1998, so she was draft eligible this year. I remember a discussion about whether foreign players are eligible twice if they have late birthdays and don't turn 21 before the next draft. Never heard if that was resolved. Otherwise, someone can merely sign Aokuso as a free agent.

They accused Asia Taylor of a dirty elbow on needed-8-stitches Kelsey Griffin, but the "inflammatory comments" fine seems like it is mostly or wholly from players and the coach criticizing the refs. Every league must forbid that.
