Never thought I'd see the day where anyone would rank Jasmine Thomas as a top 20 player.._________________

Vandersloot continues to be underrated. Vandersloot is one of the top 3 point guards in the league.

This was the methodology:
Who, based on last season’s statistics and the outlook towards the beginning of the 2018 season, are the top individuals in the league?
I looked at the top ten players in each of the following categories: points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, steals per game, blocks per game, 3 point %, true shooting %, offensive rating, defensive rating, and PERs.
I made a spreadsheet of all the categories, then determined how many total categories each player had been in the top ten last year.
I didn’t give a weighted bias towards any category, but I did do side by side comparison when two players were in multiple different categories, and tried to judge fairly based on overall importance.
So what are the questionable choices and order? Is your issue with the outcome or the process/methodology?

I find that methodology fairly odd. Making a cut-off between 10 and 11 is pretty arbitrary, and somethings are being double and triple counted in the categories.
I would suggest that a methodology that ranks Jasmine Thomas ahead of Diana Taurasi probably isn't the best methodology.

If it's based strictly on what they did in 2017, it's not an unreasonable conclusion.

Based purely on the 2017 WNBA season, I'd argue it's the only reasonable conclusion. |

I suppose.
Who would you pick first for your team going into this season? I think it's a pretty easy call.
The methodology just strikes me as odd.

Oh no, another top players list that includes several Sky players but not their best.
Also, throw player DRtg/DWS in the trash. They're awful.

I don't. I'm not sure how much Taurasi has left in the tank.

Seems like it was decided in Russia that her tank was empty.

I'm not sure she'll shoot as well again. But at least she'll give a shit at both ends of the floor, and should remain one of the better defensive guards in the league. Out of two total, Taurasi gives a shit at about half-an-end of the floor these days. |

I prefer J-spoon's methodology. Putting a number by a player and trying to compare a post to a PG is fruitless.

Hey everybody! Thank you for checking out my list! I wanted to be objective as possible with this list, but I can tell you one thing, it originally was going to be simply the top ten players going into 2018, and that is where some surprises, like Crystal Langhorne, who I left out ultimately, showed up in more than one category. But I used top ten stats for each category, originally thinking it was only going to be top ten. Now, were some stats over represented? I think, in retrospect, I could have gone with PERs and ignored Offensive and Defensive Ratings. I chose True Shooting or EFG rating, and I honestly wondered long and hard about 3 point shooting as a category.
What I wanted to do after I posted this list, was go back through and do it top 20 category by category, and I think I would get a more balanced list. I get why it seems an arbitrary cut off between 10 and 11. I will probably do top 20 in each stat category next season. But I added Angel at 11 because well, I think despite missing last season, she has been a top 20 player in the league, and coming into this season, she can certainly replicate her excellent play on a loaded Dream squad. Do I think players like Kayla McBride and Courtney Vandersloot could or should have made it on the list? Certainly, yes, and I think top 20 categories may have born that out.
There were players, like Chelsea Gray, who I put ahead of a legend like Taurasi, because RIGHT NOW I think Gray, looking at the stats, is the better player. But I also understand the thinking of choosing Taurasi in the playoffs in a do or die moment rather than someone else on the list.
THANK YOU FOR READING!
