Lauren Jackson

WNBA
Dominance Rating: 8.3

When Lauren Jackson notched her 1,000th career point, she became the youngest WNBA star to reach that benchmark. Ditto for 2,000. And 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000. She was, in short, a relentless scorer, a terror on the inside with a rare ability to shoot beyond the arc -- she cracked the 40 percent threshold three times in her career (2004, 2007 and 2009). But the real proof of Jackson's dominance is in the PER pudding. Three of the top five single-season PER scores belong to her, including the overall record: 35.04 in 2007. Consider: Though she herself came close to that mark the year prior (34.91), no other player in WNBA history has even reached 33. Consider too: The NBA single-season PER record is 31.82, set by ... Wilt Chamberlain in the 1962-63 campaign. Jackson's 12-year WNBA tour de force wound down in 2012, but not before she racked up the second-highest career win shares of all time (72.97) and finished as the leader in that category five times (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010). Boom.

The Dominant 20: The teams that made the biggest impact

Quote:
7. 2002 Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA)
Lisa Leslie led the L.A. Sparks to back-to-back WNBA titles in 2001 and 2002.

Keating's score: 1.66
Key stat: Led the league in wins and scoring and finished the season with their second straight WNBA crown. No team has won back-to-back titles since.

Keating's take: The Sparks swept every playoff series, beating opponents by an average of a dozen points, to win the second of back-to-back championships. Lisa Leslie had nearly 50 more rebounds than anyone else in the league -- and on June 30, she became the first woman to dunk in a pro game.

Quote:
14. 2014 Phoenix Mercury (WNBA)

Keating's score: 1.42
Key stat: Set an WNBA record with 29 wins in the regular season en route to winning their third championship.

Keating's take: Fans, talking heads and other would-be GMs, take note: How many of the teams on this list grew to dominance through tanking? Maybe just this one because the WNBA has such high-impact rookies and low salary caps. In 2012, Phoenix went 1-8 after Labor Day and finished 7-27. The next year, Diana Taurasi returned from injury, and Phoenix drafted Brittney Griner. The year after that, the Mercury blew through the playoffs, with Taurasi as Finals MVP.

Since they don't consider post-season in the rankings, Maya Moore is excluded.

The 2002 Sparks were less dominant than the 2001 version. Not sure why they chose the later team.

The 2010 Seattle Storm? The 1998 Houston Comets?

The Comets legacy is pretty much non-existent. Houston doesn't pay much attention to what the Comets have done anymore.

See 6:25 at the video below as an example.

Houston may not care much about what the Comet's did but those of us who SAW what they did will never forget it. Oh, and lets not forget that they did it back to back to back to back. 4 ships in a row. It will probably never be repeated in the w again. The Lynx have come the closest but even if they win this season it won't be 4 in a row. LA has 3 but it took 14 years before they got that 3rd one.

I'm just dumbfounded that there hasn't been a group looking to revive the Comets.

Comets basketball was a BEAUTIFUL thing.
