With less than 11:00 minutes to go, #16 UMBC is up on #1 UVA 45-31.

Didn't I see that the UVA center is out for the tourney? I haven't followed the men all that much so know nothing... but a 16 beating a 1 is indeed pretty huge. Can they hang on?

Yeah, someone is hurt, I can't remember who. I don't follow men's ball that much. I think that they said arm or wrist. Or maybe that was another player.

I do know what Haas from Purdue broke his elbow and is done for the tourney.

Something that UMBC is doing that is new to me.

When UVA scores and UMBC inbounds the ball, they let it bounce/roll up the court for a few seconds.

It takes 3-4 seconds off of the clock without the shot clock starting. It allows the other players to get down court and get a breath or two.

I'm surprised that UVA isn't picking them up just so that they have to take possession of the ball and start the shot clock counting down.

UMBC up 17 with 3:29 to go!

They just have to keep playing to win and not go into that playing not to lose mode.

Still up 17 with 1:51 to go.

UVA out of time outs and one guy has fouled out.

Up 20 points!!!!!!!!!

And the person running the twitter account for UMBC has an awesome sense of humor. I recommend going back and looking at their tweets tonight - they were awesome. When I started following the account, they had about 7,000 followers and had already gained plenty tonight - they're up to over 20,000 followers on the account now.

UMBC lost to Army (Massey #382) by 11 earlier in the year.

On April 2nd, if you go to Little Caesers between 11:30 and 1 pm, and you mention the "If Crazy Happens" promo, you will get a free lunch combo.

I see women's teams do that when they are behind at the very end of the game and want to save some seconds.

Right. Lots of teams will do it during the last minute of the game when the time clock is stopped and they are behind.

This was the last 10:00-12:00* of the game, while the time clock was running, and it was the team that was ahead that was doing it. That's the part that I have never seen. (*That's all I watched of it. They could have done it longer, IDK.)

Good strategy. UVA never adjusted for it. All they had to do was put a guy back and UMBC would have been forced to pick up the ball.

The last 11:00 of the game, UVA made 11 FG. With what UMBC was doing, they were able to run probably :30 off of the clock doing this. I doubt that it would have mattered given the winning margin, but if the game got close, those :30 could have been a lot of time that UVA needed to pull out the win.

They had better put extra staff on duty!

Is this the first time a #16 has defeated a #1 in the men's tourney?

UVA is probably now the proud owner of the TWO worst losses in men's college basketball history.

Until yesterday the worst was probably the 1982 loss by the Ralph Sampson led, #1 ranked, Cavaliers to Chaminade.

The Chaminade loss now slips to second place.

Congratulations UVA. Shocked

I love that UMBC was pretty quick to acknowledge Harvard, and Stanford reached out to Virginia. Game recognize game.

(But for the love of god don't read the comments.)

Yes, much praise for Harvard by UMBC and Virginia. And don't read the comments.

I'd still rank #1 UVA's loss to unranked NAIA Chaminade as the biggest upset in NCAA history. UMBC is the biggest upset in NCAA tourney history. Sooner or later it had to happen.

Why does the NAIA exist? I thought it was swallowed up by D-II and D-III?
