Russ Solomon, who pioneered the superstore hangout for music lovers by founding Tower Records and expanded it worldwide before internet pirates and crushing debts rendered the chain obsolete and bankrupt, died on Sunday night at his home in Sacramento. He was 92.

tower records was the bomb back in the day. and my favorite feature in tower's monthly magazine was a spot where music fans could submit their lists of desert-island discs, a term i continue to use fondly. i can't remember whether the list could only be 10 albums or 20, but both were impossible.

By the time I moved out here everything was CDs but still lots of good memories of the big store on the Sunset Strip. Not nearly as many as since the fall of record stores and the advent of the mp3 file. Now that’s been fun. Twisted Evil
