The North Carolina women's basketball team (7-0) will face its second ranked opponent of the season and play on an opponent's home court for the first time this year Monday night when the Tar Heels take on Connecticut (6-0) at the Jimmy V Classic in Hartford, Conn.
UNC is ranked seventh in this week's Associated Press poll and eighth in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. UConn is eighth in the A.P. poll and sixth in the coaches' poll.
The Tar Heels are competing in the Jimmy V Classic for the second year in a row. In last year's event, played in Raleigh, UNC beat Connecticut 71-65.
Monday's game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. Mark Jones is the play-by-play announcer, Doris Burke will provide color commentary and Rebecca Lobo will report from the sidelines. The game is the first of 10 scheduled television appearances for UNC this season.
Previous UNC-UConn meetings:
Nov. 21, 2004: UNC 71, UConn 65 (Jimmy V Classic, Raleigh, N.C.)
• Nov. 15, 2001: UConn 94, UNC 74 (Preseason WNIT semifinals, Storrs, Conn.)
• Dec. 2, 1995: UConn 77, UNC 62 (Central Fidelity Classic, Richmond, Va.)
• March 26, 1994: UNC 81, UConn 69 (NCAA East Region final, Piscataway, N.J.)
• Jan. 12, 1980: UNC 84, UConn 51 (Chapel Hill, N.C.)

Can Montgomery stay with Latta and not turn it over?
Is Houston okay to play at close to 100%?
What impact will Brit Hunter have?
Should be an exciting game. I'm going to be a homer and pick Uconn by a few.

Yikes. UCONN is turning over the ball at an alarming rate. And also, how many times did UNC foul UCONN on that one possession? haha It seemed like that possession never ended!

Hey, when are they going to interview Taurasi? If she's overseas, will they do a satellite hook-up?

Strong drive by Thomas
28-13
Carolina doesn't like the ball, so they're turning it over.

UNC leads, 45-27, with just over 15 minutes left in the second half.
For UConn, Mel Thomas looks as if she is the most improved player on the team. She had a great block on Ivory Latta and is doing a nice job of moving without the basketball.
For UNC, Latta has had some nice passes to Larkins. Little has hit some big three point baskets.

Atkinson has hit at least two 3-point baskets in this game...a shot she needs in order to be a small forward in the WNBA.
Brit Hunter had a nice layup on a fast break.

I agree with what Doris just said. If Atkinson can play with this kind of mind-set, she will play her way onto a WNBA roster. With that athleticism, and the finish at the basket that she has. She will DEFINETLY play for a team in the WNBA.

Has the Connecticut Sun ever thought of expanding to a bigger arena such as the Hartford Civic Center. It's a nice looking arena and has lots of seats. Maybe an arena for the future?

Never happen. For the Mohegan Sun, the basketball team is not a money-making venture. It is a way to get people in the door to spend money in the casinos, shops, etc. Take the team out of the casino, there is no reason for Mohegan to own it.

either uconn is worse than people are thinking, or UNC is better than people are thinking. I think it's a little bit of both. I heard UNC would be better with a better coach. But I like Latta a lot.
For Uconn I like the way Strother is fighting for rebounds in the paint. I'm not used to that.

wow. I mean seriously... wow.
UConn looked totally shell-shocked. They had about 10 minutes in the first half where they seemed like they could keep up. The rest of the game, they looked like a high school team.

I think Ron Burgundy put it best: "Boy, that escalated quickly...I mean, that really got out of hand fast."

Well..that was interssting..I have to say I didn't expect that.
Strother and Turner..what can I say. They are seniors, they are good players, they are talanted..but they certainly aren't leaders.
Mel..I love Mel, wasn't the best game..I appreciate her effort and heart though, but she can't be playing 40 minutes a game (especially his Mel Chases the ball around the court defense) and be expected to shoot very well for forty minutes..that is an unfair expectation, seeing as the entire NC team is about ten times as fast as her. She played okay, better than the majority of the team. IMO, she's the closest thing to a leader this team has, but Nicole can have five of Mel's minutes. Crocket showed some heart as well..Uconn needs a big girl to step up..hopefully Charde can heal pretty quickly..who knows what the outcome would have been if Charde had been healthy.
Bright spot..Williams..that's about it.

UConn's somewhat underwhelming recruiting the last couple of years, especially at the PG & SG spots, has come back to haunt them. During its' years of major success, UConn had great guard play (DT, Sue, Rita, Jen, heck...even Maria). UConn doesn't have that right now, and while I am hopeful that they will improve during the year, I don't think UConn will contend for a title for a few years.
This was just an embarassing and depressing game. Our worst loss in 11 years...horrible.
Oh, and to UNC: You don't need to be playing Erlana Larkins when you are up by 30 with 1:38 remaining. You were going to win the game...no need to play one of your best players.
