They eventually showed up. It's tough to keep intensity up over a long season, especially when you figure you can dial it in a bit and still win easily. Lou Holtz, a football coach at Notre Dame during the 80's and early 90's, famously talked up his next opponent as if each was a top 5 team. The vast majority of these opponents were not worthy of his near adulation. Of course he was just trying to keep his teams motivated.
