Quote:
While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula 1 Grands Prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms. We don’t believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula 1 and its fans, old and new, across the world.

I'm pretty old, but never in my life have I ever heard of grid girls, much less seen them.

So how can I miss something of which I was totally unaware? But I do.

This apparently will shut down thousands of gigs for models around the world. For what? This is not the casting couch, the molestation of child gymnasts, date rape, an extramarital affair, Franken-stein groping, or even Playboy magazine. I bet 100% of grid girls would vote to retain grid girls.

I await the abolition of the Rockettes.

I also have never heard the term "grid girls". I have seen pictures of a young model or models who pose and celebrate with the winner as they get their trophy. But I guess they hire them to hang around the pits before the race too. Seems no different than cheerleaders (more like dancers for NBA basketball teams). I wonder if they are next to go.

As expected, the grid girls are speaking out.

I'm sure most people who lose their jobs would prefer to keep them. That's not how the world works.

I have mixed feelings about seeing them go.
