....may have been on to something, after all. "We will bury you"
Quote:
"About the capitalist states, it doesn't depend on you whether or not we exist. If you don't like us, don't accept our invitations, and don't invite us to come to see you. Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you!"

I remember when that statement was live news. No twitter, etc. Just a hot news story. And the arrogant capitalists scoffed.

Frankly, Kruschev could not have known exactly HOW this might play out, nearly 70 years later. But its prophetic resonance seems more viable now, as I think of it.

Back then, it was about superpower rivalry, the freshness of nuclear possibilities, and burgeoning post-war economies. Communism vs. Capitalism.

As a dutiful young American citizen, I bought the entire schtick about Capitalism and our Great and Unparalleled Freedoms. Hey, my life was decent/good.

And we all know how utterly Communism failed....an unsustainable socio/economic model, where the lifeblood of the citizens merely enriched the few entrenched in power, and the decaying morale of a suppressed people undermined the foundation of free will and its productivity. And the USSR collapsed, and capitalism flourishes in the New Russia.

And we're not buried. Yet.

Today, Mr. Kruschev's words rang in my (cavernous) head.

So, I'm talking with a nephew about his recently-ended strike. He (and several other family members) just lived through a weeks-long strike as UAW members. I'm asking, "Are y'all happy with what you got?".

He proceeds to regale me with his displeasure, not with General Motors--they're bad enough--but with the corruption within the UAW. I hadn't heard any of this. Apparently the FBI has been onto it for a good while now.

Think about this blip on the radar screen of Hot News: who cares? Maybe not too many, but....I see it as proof that Nikita & Co. may have been on to something. CAPITALISM IS NOT ITS OWN PANACEA. If the very unions (that make capitalism waay different from communism, right!??) are screwing over their own workers, what's left to rein in the corporate greed that is our hallmark of capitalism?

Now consider our own modern economic and political landscape. In no small part, Fear of (things like) Communism and his Evil Twin, Socialism has led to the morally starved masses falling so hard for the propaganda from an uber-capitalist, so that he seemed an appropriate Savior, lies 'n bullshit notwithstanding. I believe we are witnessing the clearest ways in which Capitalism is eroding into a system that is NOT about the Greater Good.

I have no doubt Kruschev's soul was looking on in great glee when his wicked spawn gladly aided and abetted the outcome of the 2016 election. And each and every time the spineless, morally bankrupt politicians continue to rally in support of The REALLY Evil One, there is one more stroke of the spade to carve democracy's grave

Mister Krushchev said, "We will bury you"
I don't subscribe to this point of view

And then, there's the likes of Louie Gohmert ("Republican from Hee Haw", Bill Maher) and the general (reverse psychology) incitement to Civil War.

Quote:
The Observer promises it will no longer act as if things can't get any stupider, no matter how stupid they get. We've been chastened, having watched East Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert storm a secure deposition room at the U.S. Capitol last week and initiating one of the dumbest political standoffs in American history, only to see him take to the House floor Thursday and invoke the specter of civil war to defend President Donald Trump....It should probably go without saying, but we'll say it: If Gohmert doesn't want to participate in civil war, he should stop tap-dancing around starting one.

What more could make Nikita party like it's 1956??

And then, there's the (other) Opioid Crisis: Religion. Marx said it in the 1840s.
Quote:
Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.
Also often paraphrased as, "Religion is the opiate of the masses".

I was brought up to believe that this particular quote was the most brazen of heresies, and absolute proof that Marxism and religious freedom were antithetical. Wasn't religious freedom a cornerstone of democracy, and a pillar of its capitalist success?

Sam Bee illustrates this in its purest form: Paula White, on display. (....the comments are delicious!)
Or, if you prefer:The NYT explains it, too, sans the comedic interpretation.
