Chris Brown and Nick Cannon Team Up for Women’s Basketball Film

http://variety.com/2017/film/news/nick-cannon-chris-brown-womens-basketball-movie-1202645140/

Quote:
Nick Cannon is directing, writing, producing, and starring in “She Ball,” an indie film about women’s street basketball.

Cannon will star alongside Chris Brown, Cedric the Entertainer, Evan Ross, and Rebecca De Mornay.

“She Ball” follows the love of the game through the struggles of Avery Watts, played by Cannon, who enlists the baddest women’s streetball league in the city to help him save the embattled Inglewood Community Center, which he manages, all while trying to raise his seven-year-old daughter.

Quote:
To bring authenticity to the project, the movie will feature real-life athletes from the WNBA, Ball Up, and the Basketball Beauties League, including Melody Rae Kandil, Jaliyah Manuel, and former Harlem Globetrotter Tammy Brawner. Faizon Love, K.D. Aubert, Luenell, and Marla Gibbs round out the cast.

Must be a lot of the plot that doesn't involve women's street ball. Out of that list of 11 names, only 3 [Tammy Brawner, Melody Rae Kandil, and K.D. Aubert (39) ] are women under 40.

Chris Brown's Movie About Women's Basketball Is Already Facing Backlash

Quote:
So yes, it appears that a film about women that should, in theory, star women, is somehow being re-centered to focus on a man. But that isn't the only red flag that has been raised.

Fair enough, too. I don't get why anyone would be sending work in Chris Brown's direction. Especially in a project that is women-oriented. Just how tone deaf is it possible to be?

Eh, there's people who are looking for reason to be angry about anything and everything. The movie isn't "about women's basketball". It's about Nick Cannon's character who somehow uses women's basketball to save a community center. If Nick Cannon is putting up the money and is writing the script, he can damn well be the lead character in the movie and decide what it's about.
Masses of people aren't going to go see this movie if it were truly only about women's basketball. They'll see it for the star power that is in it. If women's basketball can get a little boost by being associated with the movie with a positive message, that can only be a good thing. Kudos to Nick Cannon.

Of course he has the right and ability to tell whatever story he wants. But people also have the right to be critical of what his message is. Jist like we are rightfully critical of the "mighty whitey" trope, telling a story about hero man using women to achieve his goals (even with those goals being righteous) is a questionable choise with everything happening in today's society. Although I do agree anyone getting "offended" by this is probably looking for a fight, being critical of it and being disappointed in the narrative choices is more than fair.

Perhaps when it is filmed it will be done in such a way that highlights these currents and addresses them directly and with self-awareness, but the fact that Chris Brown's name was attached to it makes this seem much less likely.

I read somewhere that song is not actually about dancing, but about playing basketball.
