... they needed one that was 30,000 square feet - largest in the world - in Shanghai.

World's largest: The new Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Shanghai measures 30,000 square feet, making it the biggest Starbucks to date.

Revolutionary concept: Located along Shanghai's Nanjing Road, it's more than twice as big as the only other Reserve Roastery in Seattle and has been described as the "first fully-immersive coffee wonderland in China."

High capacity: The store is able to hold between 1,000 to 1,200 customers at a time and has around 500 chairs on site.

Caffeine-fuelled Disneyland: There are two floors of theatrical, interactive entertainment and customers are handed an "exploration guide," which doubles as a map, when they walk in.

Symphony pipes: The coils of long copper pipes criss-cross the ceiling, carrying the coffee beans from the Copper Cask to the main bar.

Freshly baked: The food on offer is courtesy of high-end Italian bakery Princi and consists of 80 different freshly baked products.

well, shanghai is a big city, but . . . coffee in general, and starbucks in particular, has become china's new crack. new, cool coffee houses were springing up when i was there, and now travel articles can't stop talking about the cool coffee houses in shanghai. not exactly what you'd expect. and starbucks plans another 2,000 stores, on top of the 3,000-plus already in china.

(if only taco bell had caught on like that. alas, it was a bust.)

but seriously, if this mondo store's anywhere near a metro station in shanghai, it's not nearly big enough.

600 stores . . . that's only one for every 40,000 people in shanghai.

yeah, I thought New York City was bad, but Shanghai clears them by a wide margin. I also think NYC doesn't have the retail space for a Starbucks this big.
