The site that used to have these every day no longer does, so we will only get numbers for big games.
Stanford-UConn averaged 382,000 viewers. |

Know what else I couldn't figure out for the life of me, no matter how hard I searched?
What were the ratings for this year's NC title game? Were they up or down from previous years?

Not basketball, but all four Elite 8 volleyball games got pretty decent numbers on ESPNU. Here were the average viewers chronologically:
256,000
254,000
246,000
210,000 |

If volleyball were scored differently, I think it would be a great game for TV, but because the length of the matches varies so widely, ESPN and the other networks can't really deal with it effectively.
That's basketball's saving grace -- you pretty much know how long the games will be and TV can plan accordingly.

Right on cue, the NCAA women's volleyball semifinals were on tonight. They allotted two hours for the first semi, thirty minutes between matches, and then two hours for the second.
Nebraska beat PSU in a very exciting first semfinal match. Great TV entertainment, but it went five sets and consequently ran a full hour over the allotted time. The second semi now won't start until 10:30 Eastern time, and probably won't end until around 1 am or maybe later.
The wide variation in time depending on how many sets are played wreaks havock with TV schedules ( and viewer DVRs).
Now soccer and hockey, they're pretty predictable most of the time.
The change to quarters and reduction in time outs has resulted in WCBB games typically ending within the two hour window. For the men's games you still need to add 30 minutes to your recording schedule.

One thing about volleyball...it comes across very well on television, in terms of seeing the skill level of women's volleyball players. It does not look all that different from the men's game; both look highly skilled.
Women's basketball, on the other hand, comes across as "less skilled" that the men's game. Yes, some of that is the "under the rim" nature of the game. But missed layups, turnovers, the crowded paint, etc. does not come across as being in the same sphere as the men's game.
Whereas women's volleyball looks like women playing the same sport as men, women's basketball looks like a completely different sport.

An interesting point, but I wouldn't push it too far. When I watch men play volleyball, it's stunning how hard they hit the ball. I'm surprised more people don't get hurt ...

I used to have to try to dig those, although obviously not at that high a level (Bentley started their team while I was in high school).
The female to male ratio for these volleyball games interests me.
The first semifinal averaged 784,000 viewers. Here are some demographic groups and their average percentage viewing the game at a given time:
18-49: .24
F18-49: .18
M18-49: .30
18-34: .23
F12-34: .18
M12-34: .24
25-54: .24
50+: .37
The second semifinal averaged 491,000 viewers and here are the same breakdowns:
18-49: .20
F18-49: .19
M18-49: .20
18-34: .19
F12-34: .15
M12-34: .17
25-54: .19
50+: .19
The studio show between the two actually averaged 584,000 viewers which was higher than both semifinals last year. Here are the breakdowns:
18-49: .20
F18-49: .19
M18-49: .21
18-34: .19
F12-34: .19
M12-34: .16
25-54: .18
50+: .25
Obviously we do not have this level of detail for all basketball games, but we had quite a few in last year's thread. There were a couple games that had equal or greater female viewership in the available demographic groups, but generally speaking, male viewership, especially in the 12-34 age group was far greater, sometimes more than double. All of the volleyball games that I have paid attention to seem to have a pretty solid female audience compared to male audience in the younger groups and the audience itself seems to be younger than basketball. |

Interesting numbers of for the volleyball final.
The portion that was on ESPNU due to the DII Football championship game running over averaged 349,000 viewers.
Once the game hit ESPN2, it grew from the football game and averaged 1,009,000 viewers. It did better with women from 12-34 than men in that age group.
Here are some demographic groups and their average percentage viewing the game at a given time:
18-49: .30
F18-49: .29
M18-49: .31
18-34: .29
F12-34: .26
M12-34: .23
25-54: .30
50+: .47 |

On Sunday, Tulane-South Florida averaged 49,000 viewers then Texas Tech-Baylor averaged 55,000 viewers on ESPNU. Over on ESPN2, Indiana-Ohio State averaged 90,000 viewers and Florida-Auburn averaged 76,000 viewers. |

I wish volleyball would go to a timed game. In addition to a variable length, the current format allows zero playing time for the bench. There is never a situation where "the other team cannot possibly catch up/ we can't possibly catch up" due to the clock running out. And I think it makes upsets harder because at "halftime" a better team can be down 2 sets to 0, but they only need to play slightly better than the other team the rest of the way and they still win.

Monday's game did not make the top 150 cable broadcasts in ratings for 18-49 year olds so we do not have the number for it. I do have Sunday's LSU-Florida Gymnastics meet on ESPN, which averaged 322,000 viewers. |

Missouri-South Carolina 344,000
UConn-Temple 319,000
Imo these numbers exemplify the niche/minor reality of WCB.
How in the world does the first game draw only 25,000 more than the 2nd?!

I am happy to see so many more women’s games on TV this year compared to prior years. In this past week alone, I watched all or parts of at least 20 different games. That is in addition to driving out to Sioux Falls to watch a Summit league game. The unfortunate thing is that although there are plenty of Big 10 women’s games televised, we never get to see the U of MN on TV. Not even away games. And we can’t watch them online either, without paying for a service, which I will not do.

No BTN at all as part of your package? I could have sworn Minnesota had at least one TV game. Like, on an actual-facts TV channel, not this bullshit BTN "you aren't paying enough for cable programming, you know?" Plus.
But overall, it's been amazing. Streaming as a full-fledged service on par with television still needs time, resources, maybe separate bandwidth, and the preservation of net neutrality- but as an appendage of ESPN, or FS, it's been amazing.

This season the Gophers played 4 games of the conference season on the Big Ten Network.
In the Big Ten Tournament, they played their first game on Fox Sports North and their next game on the Big Ten Network.
But this season you should be able to watch them in the NCAA Tournament on some form of ESPN.
You could have watched the early season game at San Diego online for free, but that was a missable game... worst loss of the season.

I wish I had known when they were on during the season, because I would have watched them. During the tournament, it was possibly because we were out in Sioux Falls for the Summit league tournament. (Have to support our girl first, before the home team...). We did watch som BIG tourney games though.

The selection show averaged 639,000 viewers on ESPN.
Here are some demographic groups and their average percentage viewing the game at a given time:
18-49: .20
F18-49: .10
M18-49: .31
18-34: .20
F12-34: .04
M12-34: .28
25-54: .20
50+: .30
It is interesting comparing that to the Men's Selection Show. Obviously that had more viewers, but the ratio of female to male viewers for the age groups we have is way higher than for the Women's show (.57 vs 1.01 for 18-49 and .33 vs .70 for 12-34).
The Men's NIT Selection Show averaged 192,000 viewers. |

Saturday's windows averaged 369,000, 326,000, 469,000, and 407,000 viewers. The NCAA Wrestling Championship after those games averaged 628,000 viewers. The NIT game at 12pm ET averaged 633,000 viewers on ESPN.
Sunday's numbers for the first game are not available, but the NIT game at that time on ESPN averaged 478,000 viewers. The three game window averaged 481,000 viewers followed by an NIT game that averaged 293,000 viewers and then the Michigan-Baylor game averaged 343,000 viewers with no numbers available for the last game. On ESPN, Villanova-Notre Dame averaged 412,000 viewers and Virginia-South Carolina averaged 364,000 viewers.
Both Monday windows averaged 557,000 viewers. NIT games on ESPNU at the same time averaged 438,000 and 333,000 viewers. |

Are the high percentages of 50+ viewers common to all sports?
Of course, older folks like me watch more TV (hence the many medical ads for diseases that are never specified), but does women's basketball skew older than other kinds of programming, sports and otherwise?

Are the high percentages of 50+ viewers common to all sports?
Of course, older folks like me watch more TV (hence the many medical ads for diseases that are never specified), but does women's basketball skew older than other kinds of programming, sports and otherwise? |
Yes, virtually all sports skew old, although Women's Basketball is probably a little older than most of the others.
Most TV skews old except for niche comedies. Even "teen dramas" tend to rate better among older viewers.
As an example, here are some ratings for American Idol and the Voice from their head to head battle this Monday:
Voice
2-11: .80
12-34: .97
35-49: 3.19
50+: 6.51
American Idol:
2-11: .76
12-34: 1.06
35-49: 2.28
50+: 4.51 |
