MTSU lost Alex Johnson for the game due to a sprained ankle, but looks like they will hold on to beat Vandy. Blue Raider nation rejoices!

Cal has 5 players in double figures and Anigwe with 8 after 3 quarters (talk about balanced scoring) but is only tied with St. Mary's 66-66.

A rather inauspicious start for the ACC & SEC.

Let's include the Pac-12. North Dakota using a 13-5 second quarter to storm to a 25-23 lead over the Beavs.

Go Sioux! Pleasantly surprised how they’re playing against a ranked team on the road.

I'm not sure whether this is because Oregon State is terrible, or whether the Fighting Hawks are playing well. (Sioux, Fighting Hawks, whatever you want to call North Dakota).

Gulich has been...well....not shooting well thus far.

Since the naming debacle happened, I've gone with the North Dakota Anonymous.

YOU'RE NOT HELPING, DEPAUL.

St. John's did the needful, beating St. Francis College 73-49.

Glad Iona put up a decent fight against Arizona. Disappointed in LIU's loss to Yale. Woo, Seton Hall opened a can on St. Peter's. That shouldn't have been that close, Michigan. Yay, Fordham!

...yes. Yes, I have a lot of teams.

So it is! Northern Colorado is welcome to keep making Savannah shoot free throws! Wheeee! Looking at Northern Colorado's Schedule, they have a nice chance for a decent at large resume. LSU, Quinnipiac, Colorado State, Fordham, and BYU are all on the schedule.

UNC wins 94-88 behind 35 from Savannah Scott!

Interesting that their top 2 scorers are named Savannah, Scott and Smith.

Cal pulled out the win late 87-80 and Anigwe wound up as the leading scorer with 17 points. 5 other Bears were in double digits and freshman Kianna Smith contributed 8. While Cal only trailed once after the first quarter (73-71 with 5 minutes to go) they were never able to put the Gaels away until the final minute. This is not a team that can offer any resistance to UConn, its next opponent, but looks like it should compete for a top 4 spot in the Pac 12.

Mercer beats Central Florida 73-64. Bears were up 22 going into the 4th then let off the gas.

Also: UCLA's score (129 points) against SJSU beats a school record that had stood since 1976!

Now if another school had done that they would probably be vilified for running up the score.

Well, Hampton looks like they're walking away with the win! The first major team to lose this year goes to North Carolina! Will Mizzou be the first ranked team to lose?

One of the double digit scorers for Hampton was grad transfer Alina Starr. She played her prep years in Minnesota for state champion DeLasalle and then signed with Auburn. Her heart wasn't in it and she thought about quitting basketball but then Stollings took over at Minny and Starr's love for basketball was reignited as she returned home to play for Goldy. She earned her degree but still had eligibility left. However Stollings wasn't interested in retaining Starr. Feelings were hurt but Starr apparently still has her love for the sport and is playing her final collegiate year at Hampton.

I understand this statement, and have probably said it once or twice. But after watching the Bruins last night, I have to look at, and respect, the other perspective. I mean what’s a team to do? They still have to play and take shots. Obviously the Bruins were a superior team to SJSU, everyone on the team played double digit minutes and every player scored. Billing played only 16 minutes and had 19 pts and 11rebounds...... The guard, Canada, Burke and Corsaro played 26, 30 and 20 minutes respectively. Reality, no matter who the team, sometimes you just can’t help what happens on the scoreboard.

Looks to be an interesting season all across the scoreboard.....

Notre Dame leading Mt. St. Mary's 33-20 at the end of one quarter

Two best things - Shepard has 11 pts and 6 rebounds in the first Q, all of the points coming inside, no 3s. And Westbeld is playing here in the second quarter which is GREAT news. I didn't think she'd see the court for another month or more.

61-35 at the half.

BTW - is the plan to have one massive miscellaneous thread for the season, or to start a new daily one each day?

I think a dated daily one is how we've done it in the past. Doesn't matter to me either way as long as we do it consistently.

ND leads Mt St Mary's 93-53 at the end of 3 Q.

Ogunbowale passed the 1000 pt mark. (Took two seasons plus 3/4 of a game. Mabry will likely join her in the 1000 pt club this month.)

Interesting lineup. ND has two walkons, two freshmen, and Westbeld in the game. Senior forward Westbeld is the one bringing the ball up the floor.

ND plays at Western Ky and then at Oregon State the next two games.

Final score - 121-65.

ND was led by Ogunbowale with 21 but had six players in double figures and shot over 58% from the field and had only 9 turnovers.

I was pleasantly surprised how they looked considering all the question marks about who would actually be available to play.

Eleven players played, eleven players scored, including the two walkons. That's the entire team for the season.
