Surprised to see that SDSU only has 3 points in this weeks poll. They almost beat the now #3 team Louisville.

Same Top 17 as last week

Villanova up 2 to 18 after a win over LaSalle
Green Bay up 2 to 19 after a win over Northwestern
California up 4 to 20 after a victory at Kentucky
Michigan up 2 to 21 after a thorough drubbing of Delaware State
Texas A&M down 3 to 22 after a thumping by Oregon. If they had kept it close maybe they wouldn't have dropped
Iowa up 2 to 23 after a victory over Drake
Oklahoma State up 2 to 24 after a couple of 100+ pt wins over cupcakes
South Florida down 3 to 25 after being bumped by Michigan State
--------------
Stanford free-falling down 8 to 26 after losses to Western Illinois and Tennessee

Stanford out

While it is true that Stanford dropped out, the Cardinal is still #26 despite being 6-6 with a loss at home to W Illinois and a best win over Belmont. Some of the teams they are ahead of include:

Michigan St - Losses to UConn, @Notre Dame, and @Miami, win over S Florida
Syracuse - Only loss to Mississippi St, win over Drexel
Ball St. - Undefeated, win over Western Kentucky, and yet got only 1 vote.

At some point I would hope that polls would rank teams based on how teams have actually played. Stanford has played one of the toughest schedules in the country and 5 of their losses are to top 15 teams, but that still leaves them only 6-1 against unranked teams, none of whom are in the top 50. If voters aren't going to take the polls seriously maybe it is time we don't either.

Good to see Okla St has finally cracked the list. They're one of the most underestimated teams in the country.

For the first-time in 312 weeks - the streak started in 2001 -- Stanford is no longer ranked in the AP Top 25 poll. Their streak was tied for third longest all-time in the AP Poll with Duke.

Week 9

http://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/rankings/_/poll/1/week/9/seasontype/2

Same Top 8 as last week. Here's how the Bottom 17 faired.

Stanford and Arizona St sneak back in.

Green Bay and USF out

Every week I see teams that move up by virtue of someone else losing and falling down, rather than doing anything impressive themselves.

Six Pac 12 teams in the top 25. Oregon is the only top 10 team, but what that means is tremendous balance and an exciting regular season, even if the conference won't have too many teams left after the first weekend in the NCAA.

I'm not sure I understand the "logic" of this, if there is any.
You have an entire conference that lost every meaningful game it played except 1 ( UCLA over Baylor) during the OOC portion of the schedule. But teams that beat no one, now beat other teams from the same conference who also beat no one, and that merits a top 25 ranking? How does that work exactly?

I will expound on my logic, and what I see as the logic of the voters, but I really don't understand yours. First, you contend that the entire conference lost every meaningful game but 1. That is a sad commentary on women's basketball if wins over top 20 teams like Oregon had at Texas A&M and again vs. the Aggies on a neutral court aren't considered meaningful. By that standard exactly how many meaningful games have there been this season; maybe a dozen. There have been only 22 losses by teams ranked higher than Texas A&M (six of them by Pac 12 schools so they clearly can't be that meaningful). The 6 ranked schools have a combined record of 53-17 (excluding conference games). That includes a record of 0-7 vs top 5, 1-11 vs top 10, and 3-15 vs top 20. Of those 18 games, only 5 were at home, 4 were at neutral sites and 9 were on the road. The only 2 losses outside the top 20 were ASU to Green Bay and Stanford to Western Illinois.

As an unabashed fan of the Pac 12 I am happy that our teams challenge themselves with tough schedules non-conference. This year we lost to some of the best teams on the road, but those games just prepare us more for the conference games and NCAA tournament to come. And if you look a little further you will see that Washington St beat Rutgers, the surprise team in the Big 10. Washington beat Creighton (who just handed Villanova its first loss). Both games were on neutral sites. And USC was within a 1 point loss to Texas A&M of being undefeated non-conference. I made clear that I didn't think the Pac 12 would be heavily represented in late March, but I believe that throughout January and February it will feature the most consistent high quality competitive matchups in women's basketball this season.

So the question is turned to you. Who do you believe should be ranked instead? What is a meaningful game? Would you prefer to just have four team conferences (Notre Dame, Louisville, Florida St, Duke) or (Mississippi St, Tennessee, South Carolina, Missouri) where each team plays everyone else 6 times, so every game matters? Or do you just want to forget the season altogether and pick the final four right now since we have four worthy undefeated teams? I'd rather watch a few months of very good basketball, even if there are a few teams that are better.

You don't say how this happens. Only way it happens is if a team from the Top 8 drops. So either there'd be a big upset of one of the teams in the Top 7, or a relatively minor upset of #8 Texas to Oklahoma St.

I think it's more likely Oregon drops rather than go up, and most likely just stays the same.

And with Oregon playing at UCLA there is a good chance the Ducks will lose.
