With apologies to Mercer fans, this is a joke. They are, I'll grant you more worthy of a ranking than Belmont but that's a low bar.
In the most recent game, they beat UNC Greensboro by three, count them, three points.
Maybe UNC Greensboro is a sleeper team? Michigan is out of the ratings, But Massey has Michigan a 25 point favorite over UNC Greensboro.
Massey thinks Mercer should beat Greensboro by 18, so winning by 3 Is Way underperforming. Nobody but nobody thinks UNC Greensboro should be ranked.
Mercer beat Western Carolina by seven. Massey thinks they should win by 31.
Western Carolina is ranked 551 by Massey. Just barely beating Western Carolina is not a sign you should be ranked.

I have no problem with a team winning by less than they can. Indeed the problem with relying on ratings like Massey or Sagarin is that the margin of victory can be manipulated by coaches based on what they want to get out of games. In the case of Mercer I can point to the two games in their conference that should have been the toughest, the road games at E Tennessee St and Chattanooga, that they won by 21 and 20 respectively. Another way to evaluate the Bears is to look at their 2 losses. They lost by 21 points to Georgia and by 5 points to Western Kentucky. Missouri, who is ranked #9, lost to Georgia by 12 and to W Ky. by 3.
None of this is to say that Mercer should or should not be ranked #25 in the coaches poll. I personally believe that they are better than Belmont, who is ranked #23 by the AP, but reasonable people can differ. And I believe both are probably more appropriately ranked in the forties than in the twenties. But Mercer is one of only 16 teams that has not lost a game to a team outside the RPI top 50.
