good bye little guards (only kind of serious with trades below, but don't hate it.)

Plum and #13 to Seattle for #5

Jefferson to NY for Boyd and L. Allen

Vegas drafts Wilson #1 and Deshields #5

Vegas
Boyd/L. Allen
McBride/Colson
Deshields/A. Montgomery or Hamby or Coffey (2 of the 3)
Wilson/Burdick/Dos Santos
Harrison/Alexander

Seems like a Laimbeer kind of team

When it comes to the WNBA, franchises go where there's an owner ready to spend the money

Quote:

It has felt for a few years that Spurs Sports & Entertainment was losing interest in the Stars, who have had the worst record in the league the past three seasons, haven't reached the playoffs since 2014, and haven't posted a winning record since 2012.

I've got the Thrill on my legitimate names list as well.

But kind of surprised no one is on board with the Las Vegas Nomi Malones.

If the MGM Grand is involved it will be

The Las Vegas Grand

Then they could be the Lions (or Lionesses) after the lion that roars at the start of MGM movies.

If they were going that direction they'd surely just call them the Las Vegas Showgirls. Fewer copyright question marks. Wink

IMO getting Bill as the new headcoach and GM is a sign that they are serious about this team.

Three cities that should have WNBA franchises.

http://www.excellesports.com/news/three-cities-have-wnba-franchises/

Agree on the Bay Area & Knoxville, but not Charlotte. And why not Houston & Portland first over Charlotte for a returning franchise?

And, Bill wouldn't have taken the job if he didn't see the potential of the team.

Never saw this team abandonment coming... Sad

Thought about that too, but does that mean they have to bring in Congreaves or Leedham for the staff?

Maybe Bill will keep Riley, she played for him in Detroit when they won a championship. Don't know if she has any coaching skills. Wonder what her contract with SAS was for for, maybe just one year same as VJ. The buyer must have offered Bill some big bucks and you would think there must be some other connection there as well unless Bill was letting it be known he was looking for a change. Is there a big enough fan base in Vegas to support a WNBA team in the summer with NBA summer stuff going on there at the same time?

Exactly. Many of us have beef with her personal opinions, but she was a talented and successful basketball player.

(if I were in the mood to be petty, I'd point out that the #2 pick in 2007 was rather instrumental in a certain trade, and also possesses a championship ring)

Las Vegas is shown as being the 29th largest metropolitan area in the US.

That puts it ahead of Indianapolis (#34) and Hartford (using that for the Sun) (#47). And there is the tourism factor and casino factor. Smallest WNBA metro area ever was Tulsa (#55) followed by Salt Lake City (#48 ).

Hope it is a casino-with-a-small-arena deal like the Sun where they comp gamblers with free tickets, versus playing in the NBA-sized T-Mobile arena or MGM Grand arena.

Las Vegas power brokers unaware of WNBA team’s move to valley

MGM CEO Jim Murren said in an October 2016 interview that he was pursuing an NBA team that he could move to Las Vegas to join the NHL’s Golden Knights as anchor tenants at T-Mobile.

#1 2017 Kelsey Plum
#2 2016 Moriah Jefferson
#3 2014 Kayla McBride
#2 2007 traded for Becky Hammon
#4 2006 Sophia Young

I'm surprised a NBA franchise is divesting itself from the WNBA. That is not the greatest sign. Las Vegas should be a decent place for a franchise. Casinos will buy all the tickets and hand them out as door prizes and casino perks. As long as someone pays for the tickets it makes financial sense. However the team will need to play near the Strip for that model to work. Good luck to them!
Will this be the only shakeup this off season? Atlanta and Dallas both had disastrous seasons (the reasons why have been discussed on this forum many times) and were already operating on thin margins. They are not mentioned much, but the Chicago franchise has serious issues as well. Overhead costs and operating expenses and government taxes are all significantly higher in Illinois than in the rest of middle America, making the cost of doing business there exceptionally high. The Stars moving does help make a mockery of Borders' claims of amazing success during her tenure though. Healthy successful franchises generally speaking don't relocate.

Teams move in sports all the time without any regard whatever for how healthy or successful they are. The NFL is the most profitable league in the US. They've had teams move in each of the last two seasons and have another one expected soon.

That's because none of those teams were able to get the new stadiums every NFL team needs (wants).

I do feel bad for VJ. Didn't like some of coaching choices but still think she is a quality person. Hope she gets to do something she likes. Maybe she'll move over into college.

Not sure why any of the players would be angry about the move. I mean, if I played in San Antonio Texas, where there is really nothing to do, and had a chance to move to Las Vegas to play during the summer, I wouldn’t be able to pack my suitcases quick enough. Buh-bye

Different strokes for different folks. Personally I much prefer the laid back nothing to do San Antonio to the noise and glitz of Vegas. But compared to the situations many play in overseas, it really doesn't matter. It's not like they have days and days of time with nothing to do wherever they are.

The bigger thing might be those with family/spouses...

I can't stand Las Vegas ... the weather is horrible during the summer, and the Strip is tawdry. The rest of the city is just a city in a desert where you can't go outside during the day.

That said, it still could be a very good WNBA location.

It's weird that everything about this move keeps leaking out except for who the hell is buying the team. Things have apparently progressed enough for whoever it is to negotiate with a coach who, as far as we know, was under contract to another team. The story that San Antonio were dumping the team was days ago. And yet nothing about the ownership group (and likely playing venue that would probably be part of that information).

It probably doesn't mean anything, but it's just strange. Someone like Feinberg got enough confirmation on the other stories but can't go to print on a new owner?

My post was a bit on the negative side and for that I apologize. Hopefully fans start showing up for Dallas. That is a very prosperous area and it is important to have geographically diverse areas for all big leagues.

The weather is horrible in the summer, your right. I visited Vegas for the first time about 4 years ago and while I love casinos, I wasn’t impressed with anything about Vegas except for how elaborate and beautiful the casino’s are. I would not lose any sleep if I never went back. I much prefer *gasp* Atlantic City over Las Vegas. Sure AC is every more tawdry, and disgusting, and run down, etc etc but it does have an awesome boardwalk and it’s right on the beach. And with the new ultra fancy Hard Rock Resort taking over the Taj Mahal (over $500 million in renovations), they are expected to pave the way in helping turn that city around somewhat.

That said, what a better city than Vegas to have a WNBA team that plays in the horribly HOT summer in the middle of a dessert. They’ll pack the arena just for people to get 2 hours worth of air conditioning. Lol. Maybe they’ll add some slot machines in the arena’s concourse next to the concession stands. Laughing

Since day 1. The fans, the staff, coaches, my teammates you guys showed me love. Real love. San antonio is my home, always will be. I became an all star, found a home in @cbcsocial , and have had the opportunity to meet and become close with so many people I now consider family. So yeah, it hurts. I planned on beginning and ending my career in San Antonio. I loved it there. But, i know God has a bigger plan and I am trusting that.
To the fans, i'm speechless. Your support is unbelievable. No matter our struggle. You were our rock and that will never go unappreciated. We love and will miss you.
The next chapter begins, but my first one is never forgotten. Vegas, i promise to give you my all just like I did to SA. That's a promise.
Love, Mac. #21

Laughing

I've never been to Vegas, but I've been to AC twice, and never-the-fuck-again.

Vegas seems to make a bejesus lot of conference tournaments work, so maybe this can be a thing.

I'm guessing some Casino has bought the Stars but I also have a feeling there may be an ex-NBA player in the mix (besides Laimbeer) as a partial owner, or whatever is higher than a GM but lower than an owner kind of position. Could be wrong just a feeling.

Living in Jersey, I can't stand A.C. There's dozens of better casinos in the tri-state area (Parks, Mount Airy, & Sands in PA. Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun).

It's hot in the summer in a lot of places, no question -- but for me, the main attraction of Vegas, the Strip, holds no charm at all. The Riverwalk, the museums in Phoenix and Atlanta, are much more attractive to me.

But I don't really matter because I'm not flying to Las Vegas for a WNBA game. If the people who might do so are more likely to go because of The Strip, that's great, and it's what the league needs.

But again, what the league really needs is a lot more gambling action on the games. That would increase TV ratings immediately.

And if you've got two places where the W can't be on the book... small potatoes, I know, but inconvenient.

I feel so bad for the fans in San Antonio!

For so many years San Antonio was my only option of someplace close enough to drive to watch a Wnba game. One of the games that sticks out the most for me was driving down there on Sept. 27, 2008 to watch Game 2 of the Conference Finals game against the Sparks. Being a huge fan of CP3 since her days as a Lady Vol, there was no way I was missing that game; even knowing that I wasn't able to stay the night and would be driving the 300 miles back home after the game.

Sophia hit a 14 foot turnaround at the buzzer to send it to a Game 3 and the SA crowd went nuts. I'll never forget the electricity in the air or the excitement and smiles on the faces of those awesome & loyal fans.

Stars fans, make the drive up to College Center in Arlington to watch the Wings. We will make you feel as welcome and at home as you always did for those of us who came to the AT&T Center to see your Stars!

San Antonio Express-News: We let the Stars down

Quote:
The same blame can be shared by women and open-minded men who talk a good game about girl power, sisterhood and global empowerment, but couldn’t find time to plop down a few stinking bucks and show up to support the team.

Women should support women’s sports. They’re right to demand fairness, but that’s only part of the equation.

If you want gender equality in sports, don’t waste your time tweeting and complaining about it.

Support it.
