“[JJones] is handling some stuff at home with family, working through some things that she needs to do in order to get here,” Miller said. “We expect her here any time and we’re very supportive of her as an organization and can’t wait to get her back.”

Is there any reading between the lines to be done here? Is it a possibility JJones could bail on this season?

Quote:
“I’m still anxious for that,” Miller said. “Now, we’re waiting for JJ to arrive. We will just have to wait a little longer but I can’t wait to get going and practice with Chiney and JJ on the floor together and see how they’re going to mesh.“

Why is he so eager for this when he has already claimed Chiney wants to be brought back slowly?

Quote:
Bentley is also pretty secure in her position on the team, the same can’t be said for Brionna Jones. “Brionna is in more of a fight for her job so she will get here a little quicker,” Miller said.

Hmm... nice culture you’re building there. Better get back quick, Brionna.

Quote:
“Once [Romero’s] visa comes through, she will get on a plane,” Miller said.

Quote:
“But our core base is here, together, confident and the chemistry is great.”

Isn’t JJones a part of the core base?

Quote:
“I think we’re a team that, last year, we knew what we were capable of and everyone else was surprised. We finally got it together.”

That’s an awkward quote coming from Chiney since she wasn’t a part of the “we”. I guess her spirit was there.

Or could she be experiencing the same thing as Liz Cambage ? Maybe she wont get on the plane neither who knows Rolling Eyes

It does seem from this article it could be a paperwork issue:

She seems to be looking forward to returning:

This made me laugh:

Quote:

“We probably will only have one person there who wasn’t there last year so I think it’s going to be really good for us because our chemistry will be there and we know how to play with each other and we all know the system, so I think it’s going to be really good for us this year.”

which one of Brown, Romero, George, or Ogwumike does she think will be THE one?

I’m a little surprised that JJones doesn’t get Waltiea Rolle a camp invite, but maybe they’re too similar to be on the same team. Reeve seems to have forgotten about her.

I don't think they're all that similar really. Waltea is more of a big lunk and doesn't have the range.

She’s a lunk just because she has about 10 pounds more muscle?

I'm just going by my memory of her playing style which is, or was, lunkish. My definition of lunk: big and physical and plays and bangs close to the basket. Sorry if that offends you.

Not offended, just confused by the description.

Here’s what the director guy standing between them in above pic says about Rolle.
Quote:
“Waltiea is a veteran. She’s a perennial pro and she has definitely improved her fitness since last year and I know she wants to achieve some personal milestones like getting back into the WNBA and she’s well on her way to doing that. So bringing back both of these girls together to work is a good experience. It was a historical one because we had the first and the second players to play in the WNBA on the court at the same time.”

Sun Welcome Newcomers, Prepare For Preseason Tests

http://sun.wnba.com/news/sun-welcome-newcomers-prepare-for-preseason-tests/

Quote:
“I’m really excited to have Bri back after her first season overseas, giving us a big, physical presence,” Miller said of Jones. “Romero, in two practices, being here for 48 hours, has already impacted us. She’s a very smooth decision-maker with the ball (and) a very capable, high efficiency shooter. She’s already raised the level of play.”

Hmm.... Romero making the team would raise some interesting possibilities.

JThomas/Brown/Romero
CWilliams/Bentley/Banham
Stricklen/Tuck
AThomas/COgwumike
JJones/(George vs BJones)

If Miller loves Romero enough to keep her, then the only way he can keep (presumably) Banham is to cut either George or BJones, which would suddenly make them a little thin at post, but not really since they have Tuck who can play either PF or SF.

He has to keep Romero, she's the key to getting Alba here. Wink

That could be part of his enthusiasm. This could lead to a trade of Banham for the rights of Cruz, because you gotta get something for Banham, the #4 pick in 2016. Trouble is... MIN has no room for Banham. Is there another team that needs her? Probably not.

The SG spot seems to be where most teams are stacked. So I doubt anyone needs Banham this season.

No. Not at all. Banham has still done nothing to warrant a job in the WNBA. I just don’t think she’s going to be cut and replaced by Romero. Plus, I’d rather keep a player on the team that is going to be there every year, not someone who may or may not play any given season. Plus, the reigning coach of the year seems to still have Banham in his long term plans.

Brionna Jones is the most likely to get cut. Especially with the return of Ogwumike and addition of George. I just can’t see the purpose of a 6 guard rotation. That just seems too many to me. 5 guards and 7 forwards (small to large) seems like the best combination.

Any bets on whether Chiney ever plays overseas again?

I guess she answers this further down in the article.

She worked her ass off for 1-2 years to come back from injury. I doubt that she does that just to play 1 more season..

Wouldn’t she work out hard whether or not she was a WNBA player? She’s still young. This new expanded role just happened recently so priorities could change.

She stayed in Connecticut and trained with Sun staff so yes i think being a wnba player is important for her and to stay connected even when injured

I agree - she can make $100 k per year playing the summer (with other perks as well) and make ESPN money (whatever that is) the rest of the year. Plus, being a current WNBA player (and potentially a star) can only help her credibility as an analyst. Why wouldn't she want to keep playing?

She got a mention at the start of the most recent Hoop Collective podcast - the producer said it was the first time he'd ever had one of the analysts/experts/reporters/whatever say they couldn't record at a certain time due to playing in a preseason game. Smile

She wouldn't need to be in WNBA game ready shape if she wasn't a WNBA player. I'm sure she would still workout, but I'd guess the types of workouts and the kind of shape she would strive for would be different.

Based on their preseason games, I see George as their final cut unless they cut Laney and keep George.

PG: JThomas/Brown
SG: Williams/Bentley/Banham
SF: Stricklen/Laney
PF: AThomas/Tuck
C: JJones/Ogwumike/BJones

The Sun’s final roster has been finalized

Jasmine Thomas/Lexie Brown
Courtney Williams/Alex Bentley/Rachel Banhan
Shekinna Stricklen/Betnijah Laney
Alyssa Thomas/Morgan Tuck
Jonquel Jones/Chiney Ogwumike/Brionna Jones

Miller is saying Jonquel Jones should be here in time for the season opener, and if not, by the Sun’s 2nd game for sure.

So Laney makes the final cut over George. Miller going small at OF with A Thomas and Tuck.

I'm pretty sure that's Ay Mate's depth chart, not an official one.
The player names would be correct though.

I'm pretty sure that's Ay Mate's depth chart, not an official one.
The player names would be correct though.

Agree. Expect to see Chiney playing the 4, and possibly even starting with Thomas and Jones.

A. Thomas as a playmaking power forward was one of the main reasons for the Sun's success last year. Putting her back at the three could complicate the offense, as it means two players in the lineup do not have to be defended for outside/three point shots (as opposed to only one - A. Thomas - last year).

You can start A. Thomas and J. Jones and bring C. Ogwumike of the bench at the 4 and the 5 with all three getting around 25 minutes a night with B. Jones and Tuck filling in when needed.

I think they'd be wise to keep Thomas at the 4. They're much easier to defend when Thomas plays the 3.

I don't remember how successful it was, but they also tried to play Tuck some at SF. She can at least shoot. I'm guessing A. Thomas will play some at SF and some at PF depending on matchups.

35% FGs and 28% 3FGs. Those numbers suggest Tuck should be on the wing for a short period of time.

JJ missing most of training camp while Chiney is there. So i dont know if its a good idea to not start Chiney for the first couple of games.

Tbh the best chance of Sun ever winning a championship is that A Thomas works on her midrange and 3pointshot instead of 'hiding' her at the PF spot
and then have her start with Chiney and JJ.
