New York Liberty guard Sugar Rodgers has been named the 2017 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, the WNBA announced today. The fifth-year guard earned the award as the league’s top reserve for the first time.
The 26-year-old Rodgers received 15 votes from a national panel of 40 sportswriters and broadcasters. Minnesota Lynx guard Renee Montgomery was second with 12 votes and Washington Mystics guard Ivory Latta finished third with four votes.

She started 15 games though
I also don't think she's exactly thrived coming off the bench. Some good games but incredibly inconsistent as the 6th woman for New York.

Really thought L. Mitchell would get this. She only started a handful of games.

She came off the bench more games than she started; I"m pretty sure that's the only actual prerequisite.

Yeah, I'm not feeling this either. If I'd had my act together enough to vote in the Rebkell's awards thread, I'd have voted Montgomery. Sugar's been a hot mess, especially off the bench.

Sugar was MIA during their 10 game win streak, so it just boggles my mind how she won this.

I don't want to trash Sugar Rodgers, but I'm one more Liberty fan here who is very surprised about this award.

Like ROY, this award is virtually always based on scoring. Rodgers was eligible and averaged double digit scoring. That's pretty much the ballgame

I'm happy for Sugar.
But IMO she is a much better Starter then bench player.

Even though her shooting percentages were subpar and quite a bit worse than Montgomery's. Makes no sense, since the voters seem to have more sense than that with MVP lately.

Whether there is a set limit or not my guess is come voting time too many voters saw R. Montgomery as more of a starter than a 6 woman.

It's puzzling that Mo Currie did so poorly in the balloting, since she was the highest scoring eligible player.

I have to think that most voters think of her as a starter, since that is where her career has been mostly spent.

So naturally they voted for Sugar Rodgers, who started 33 games last year

Before this season, Currie had started 93% of her games, going back more than a decade. Rodgers started every game last year, but only 20 other games in her 5-year career.

I always feel that this award should go to someone whose actual "position" is sixth player. That it's by design and helpful, not simply because they're not playing well enough to start.
When Sugar has been coming off the bench this year it has been my impression that it was because she was playing like crap and had lost her starting job. It was because she had been benched, not because someone decided she could really help the team coming off the bench.
There don't seem to be a lot of good choices this year ( maybe Sims, but she was kind of a late season bloomer, it seems), but this announcement was met by me with a "what?".

In some years there are players like that - Bonner and Pierson come to mind - but in general I think this award is pretty weird and completely unnecessary.
