I don't see Laimbeer going with any kind of Jefferson/Plum/McBride triad. If he's been handed both HC/GM jobs again, how much player movement can we expect?

I don't either. It's just Spooner hoping to take advantage of the situation.

The last thing Laimbeer wants to do is make a trade that even looks like it may favor the Liberty.

Laimbeer has been willing to try things in the past that might not seem like they fit his usual plans. He went into the season that just ended expecting to use a Prince/Rodgers backcourt for significant minutes (likely with Zellous at the 3, so a pretty small perimeter overall). He'll pivot away from it pretty quickly if things aren't working, but I wouldn't say he's glued to anything apart from team-oriented man-to-man defense. Otherwise he'll adapt.

Obviously he's never been afraid of a trade, but I don't think he'll be anxious to dump anyone just to re-shape the roster. You might make the trade if you're getting good value from somewhere, but otherwise you work with what you've got.

On a separate note, do San Antonio have any players deeply tied to the local area? I know Vegas isn't quite the same as moving to Tulsa, but we saw the Shock kinda fall to bits when they moved away from Detroit. Are there any players who won't want to be part of the shift? (not that there are many on the San Antonio roster that you'd be overly devastated to lose)

Well for one thing, that was nearly a decade ago. Things change.

The Shock were a proud successful team full of vets that just won a championship. By comparison the Stars are, umm, a accumulation of young players, most of which are lucky to have jobs playing WNBA basketball. If some of them don't want make the move, it's no big loss. I don't anticipate that happening though.

Closer to home for Plum, isn't it... if she considers San Diego area as home.

Looks like Colson is on board for Vegas.
Burdick, Sequoia Holmes, and Hamby retweeted this, so they're probably on board too.
Plum, Kayla Alexander, Zahui, and Katie Smith liked the tweet.

The Maloofs waited too long to announce they were pulling the plug even though it was reported someone was interested in moving them to the Bay Area(not Joe Lacob). The Comets were put up for sale immediately after the season ended and no one came through. The Charlotte Sting were rumored to relocate to Kansas City with a potential ownership group but the group failed to have the necessary funds to buy the team.

We still haven't heard where the team will be playing, but if it's in a casino, the Mohegan Sun model may have been the inspiration. And Vegas should work even better than Mohegan in a lot of ways ...

But in a lot of ways it probably doesn't. The entertainment options are limited in the middle of the woods of Eastern Connecticut but virtually unlimited in Vegas. People go to Vegas for the dozens of big name shows and concerts, sporting events, hundreds of restaurants and clubs, party pools, and dozens of giant flashy casinos. The competition for attention is 1000 times greater in Las Vegas than the relatively captive audience at Mohegan Sun.

I would think they need to focus on building a local resident fan base rather than expecting to rely on tourists.

The only casinos that own arenas are MGM (3) and Boyd Gaming (Orleans, oh and they also own Sam's Town which seats 1,200 and is used for things like pro wrestling, but is probably way too small for this). But I thought both MGM and Boyds had denied involvement?

Good points, but apparently the WCC tournament does pretty well for both men and women. Presumably, WNBA fans who don't live in a WNBA city could time their visits to coincide with a game, just as Mark Davis expects Raider fans to fly into Las Vegas for weekends when the Raiders are at home.

It might work. It might not. But there don't appear to be a lot of other options.

Way more things to do in Las Vegas, and also way more people going there. The Mohegan Sun has 1,563 hotel rooms. The casinos on the strip have 96,445 hotel rooms (61 times more). But the Sun probably has a higher percentage of people who visit but don't stay overnight.

The Mohegan Sun has the advantage in that must get a fair amount of those Connecticut people that attend UConn games in good numbers.

This article Has UNLV (Thomas & Mack Center), the guy who owns the hockey team, and the Maloofs denying involvement. The MGM did not respond to their request for comment and they didn't mention the Orleans.

Possible Las Vegas move excites young WNBA star Kelsey Plum

Quote:
Stars general manager Ruth Riley emailed the players to say they were having a conference call. The call confirmed rumors that the team was being sold.

“There was silence for about 15 seconds on the phone. It was so unexpected,” Plum said Sunday in a phone interview from Turkey, where she’s playing this winter. “I think everyone was shocked. Moriah (Jefferson) asked if we would all still be together.”

The players under contract will make the move, but most of the staff will not.

Quote:
“It’s heartbreaking as we had laid a great foundation,” Johnson said in a phone interview. “They understood what I wanted to do. They understood the system. They understood it was bigger than individual stats. It was about a sisterhood, a trust. Playing the game the right way. They bought into it.”

Atlanta is open and I’ll put my name in that hat. Hopefully that will pan out for me. I’m a teacher and want these kids to be successful, be their best and develop as great players. I love this league, I love the W. Made a lot of sacrifices, we all made sacrifices, we wouldn’t want this league to fold, not be successful. My goal, as a former player and former coach of the Stars, is to help this league grow any way I can.”

Plum was excited for the potential move to Las Vegas, which is closer to Southern California, where she grew up.

“My family and friends can get to more games,” Plum said. “Getting to Texas wasn’t the easiest thing for them. Now it’s a short flight or drive for them to come watch.”

He'll be the GM also, no doubt. He'll be the whole fricken front office. Kinda hard to pass that up. I wouldn't be surprised if he's making double what he made at NYL... and he has complete control. I wish I can find my Laimbeer "I've still got it, baby!" avatar. He gets Plum for nothing and one-armed bandit pulls for free!

At least somebody wants the Dream job. I suggested VJ as a possibility in another thread I believe. Not afraid to bench players who might just need that........

He generally does not prefer a traditional point guard and likes scoring guards who can pass to run the primary playmaking role. But "generally" is not "glued to," as you note.

Is the name Stars official now or is it still just an assumption?

Las Vegas Stars is a terrible name. It doesn’t roll off the tongue very well. It’s tough to have a name where the last letter in the city name ends in S and the teams name starts with S. I’ve always been partial to team names that start with the same letter as the city name. Like Seattle Storm, San Antonio Stars etc. Sounds better. That’s why I think they should change the name from Stars to something that starts with either L or V. Vixens is not really an appropriate name for a women’s team, but considering MGM’s logo/mascot is a lion, they should name the team Las Vegas Lions. It rolls off the tongue much better than Las Vegas Stars. Two S’s back to back like that, ick. It’s like saying Las Vegas Tars or Las Vega Stars. The S’s merge into one letter and sounds stupid.

Someone else suggested Las Vegas Aces, which is equally bad. Vegas nearly rhymes with Aces. Say ‘Las Vegas Aces’ a few times fast, sounds terrible.
Las Vegas Lions is the best name and it reflects MGM, the owners. Make it so.

Are we even sure they're keeping the "Las"? Vegas Stars is not too bad imo.

Sounds just fine to me too.
My only concern is that it might be too generic a name to stand out in Vegas among all the other shows there.

The AAA Las Vegas baseball team was known as the Stars from 1983-2000, so there may be issues there. Their new Twitter account simply says: LasVegasWNBA, so a new name would appear likely.
