I vote for the team I think will win rather than the one I want to win. I don't see it as a matter of loyalty.

Brian will keep the Sparks primed and ready to play for two reasons:

1) he wants them heading into the post season playing well;

2) they still have a chance to catch Los Lynx.

When LA is on their game they play the sweetest bball in the league. I just wish Riquna can get in on some of this. She missed everything last season with the ACL. Now the sprained knee is threatening to take her out of this post season.

Did Ticha play all 32 games that season? Bird has missed at least 2 games this season because of an injury (first game of the season and a week ago because of knee soreness) and there is a possibility that she sits out the last game so she had 9 more assists in also 32 games( or maybe even 31) so Bird is the REAL assist leader..

Okay, first of all, Bird's placement on that list is from 2003, not this year. And she got 221 assists playing all 34 games of a 34-game season, so no, Ticha Penicheiro is still the REAL assist leader.

THIS year, Bird has 200 total assists on the season, including last night, which is actually her second-most ever in a single season. I don't know how many assists Bird is going to get in the Storm's final game, or if she's even going to play, now that the Storm have clinched a playoff berth, but I'll bet everything I own that she's not going to get thirty-seven. The most assists ever in a single game was sixteen (ALSO by Ticha Penicheiro), so let's be charitable and say that Bird gets seventeen in the final regular season game: that'd give her 217 assists on the season, which would give her sole possession of the eighth-most assists in a single season.

Thirdly, nobody in WNBA history has ever had as many assists in thirty-two games as Ticha Penicheiro. The closest person to her record is Layshia Clarendon, who is the actual reason this list was posted in the first place, not Sue Bird (which should have been self-evident, since this is a Game Thread involving the Dream, and not the Storm), and the reason why I responded as I did.

Also, Clarendon went into last night's game tied with Ticha Penicheiro for fourth-most assists in a single season, at 224. Ticha set that mark in thirty games. #RealAssistLeader

Seems to me assist numbers are up a lot this season across the board. Makes me think that there is something funny about that.

Could just be that shooting has improved league-wide over twenty years.

The statistics don't really bear out that hypothesis

League average FG% in 1997: .414
League average FG% in 2017: .441

League average 3PT% in 1997: .313
League average 3PT% in 2017: .338

League average FGA/g in 1997: 61.25
League average FGA/g in 2017: 68.25

Source: Basketball-reference.com 1997, 2017

It looks like WNBA teams are averaging a full 7 more shots per game, while hitting thirty more shots per 100 attempts. That seems like it would create more assist opportunities... I mean, although I just posted the first season and the current season, I went through all of them, and while 3PT shooting has gone down in the last couple of years, after some sort of weird aberrational period in the early teens, where every team was shooting around .350, overall field goal percentages have been steadily improving since 1997.

The more shots per game is because of the shorter shot clock. 30 seconds then compared to 24 seconds now.

The .441 is a real aberration. 1998 FG% .423, 2015 FG% .425. That's no difference at all.

3P% dropped after 2012 because the league moved the line back from 20'6 to 22'1
