Another likely difference between the tennis elite of the 50's and 60's vs. the past two decades is the prevalence of steroids and other PED's. Maybe it's just my naivete or lack of information, but I doubt that earlier generation were dopers. Conversely, as in so many other modern sports, I assume tennis has a significant hidden dope problem.

Many tennis dopers have been caught and suspended. There are suspicions about both Nadal and Federer.

There were undoubtedly dopers in tennis in the 60's and 70's. It's likely more widespread today, and the PEDs have gotten more effective in the ensuing decades.
