Back in 2011, Debbie Antonelli and Beth Mowins ranked the top five programs thusly:

5. Texas
4. Old Dominion
3. La Tech
2. Connecticut
1. Tennessee

Most people seemed to think Texas over Stanford was kinda ridiculous then, and I produced a chart of F4s, championships, and #1 seeds. We've had seven more tournaments since then, so I thought it would be a good time to update...

Code:
School                  F4     F    W    #1

Uconn should have been #1 even back in 2011. They certainly are now and will forever now be the #1 program in college basketball history.

I agree with now. Forever is a long time.

1. Huskies
2. Lady Vols
3. Stanford
4. Louisiana Tech
5. Old Dominion

Honestly, I'm just in awe that NE Lousiana and Long Beach State are on this list. Dishonorable mentions go to Colorado and Nebraska.

The Beth & Debbie list (which included Texas but omitting Stanford) was ridiculous back in 2011, and looks even more ridiculous now.

Looking back, the only explanation that I can think of, is perhaps the Stanford's women's b-ball team was not on very many nationally-televised games except for the Sweet 16 or Final Four, and that the Pac-12 TV Network didn't begin until 2012, so it's more of a matter of "out of sight; out of mind". In other words, if you didn't catch them on TV, you were not likely to be thinking much of them. Rolling Eyes

Either that, or Beth & Debbie are still stuck in a late-1980's/early-1990's time vacuum. Confused

It was good to see Stanford back in the Final Four this past year..and to beat Notre Dame of all teams to get there!

Immaculata WBB pretty much fell off the face of the earth after the NCAA took over and they moved to Div III. However, Delta State won 3 additional championships and lost in one other final game in Div II. That deserves an asterisk, at least.

I've thought about this a bit, and am just totally mystified that anyone would put UT in the top five. While Mowens blowing it doesn't surprise me too much, I'd expect better from Antonelli. Stanford is obviously way better than Texas (who was generally overrated even when they were pretty good).

The question to me would be who would be next to catch Tech -- most of the teams that seem likely to gain ground (Baylor, ND, etc.) don't have a long history of success.

Immaculata was obliterated in the mid to late '70's largely because of Title 9. All the big coed universities were compelled to create and/or pour huge amounts of money into women's basketball, and none of the small women's colleges could compete financially anymore in athletics at high levels.

Notre dame's success stems back to the 90's making final fours. Katrina Gathers then Ruth riley and so on. Id say there history of success will continue after the last 25 yrs of success they have had. If only it could equate to Nati's then id feel a bit more secure .

That may all be true, but Immaculata's decline started with the departure of Cathy Rush before the NCAA replaced the AIAW, and no coach has had a winning record since Rush, even in Div III. Contrast that with Delta State's subsequent success in Div II.
