“There were so many days growing up that I never ever, ever felt I would get to this point,” Thomas said. To be here and to be where I am is truly by the grace of God. [My siblings and I] say this all the time — how in the world did we end up so good? Just for us to have been able to get out, we’re the ultimate statistic. Like, we’re the negative statistic when you talk about who we are. We should have been five little black kids on the street somewhere with what we went through. And instead we turned it around and gave ourselves a future.”

Great article! Krystal is so incredibly strong. In college, she was forced into playing against her strengths, with the offense designed to feed her the ball - but she's not a scoring post. She was WNBA level on defense, but had to find the right opportunity on a team with lots of offensive power already that basically needed a rim protector, screen setter and getting a couple of put backs per game. In DC, she's exceeded that.

In addition to Krystal's internal strength, the deLuzio family were the angels who gave Krystal the opportunity to focus on basketball and academics to set up her and her siblings for the future. And it was Krystal's strength that helped her survive tumultuous times under new Head Coach McCallie at Duke. She was bewildered by McCallie's "technique" of building a team by tearing down players as well as the offense not being tweaked when it clearly wasn't working to keep feeding her the ball. She was set up for failure and was the very last player drafted.

I kept hoping she'd find the right team and coach and I'm thrilled she finally has done so.

I'm still not really sure why Seattle didn't just match the offer sheet Washington gave her. Unlike most players signed as restricted free agents, she isn't actually wildly overpaid. It's a kick in the teeth for the Storm that she's having a significantly better season than Swords, who cost them the 6th overall pick, when they could've kept Thomas for nothing.

I totally agree. Someone's head need to roll if the Storm do not make the playoffs.
