World #2 Rafael Nadal lost in five sets to 16 year journeyman Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. After Muller won the first two sets, Nadal roared back to take the next two sets and even the match. The commentators certainly assumed Nadal would steamroll Muller in the fifth.

Still, Muller had a good chance to break and win in the normal time, but Nadal won four straight points to avoid the loss and once again even the match. No tiebreakers at Wimbledon, so the match just kept going, for nealy five hours, until Muller finally broke service to win the final set 15-13, and with it the match.

Amazing match. Some really good tennis.

They say Muller in his 16th year at age 34, is playing the best tennis of his career and earlier this year won his first ever ATP Tour title.

I was watching Fed and was aware Nadal lost the 1st 2 sets and not surprised he tied the match up.

I watched the 5th....god bless Wimbledon's refusal to go to a final set tiebreak and they're "mostly-white" attire requirements- tennis the way it should be. Smile

Up until this year I've dug Raffa but I've tired of his OCD and histrionics, so I was pulling for the stoic Muller and thought he outplayed Nadal in the 5th and deserved the win. What a great achievement for the guy- mano a mano vs probably the best 5-setter after having lost the 3rd and 4th sets.

The kind of match we live for.

Over an hour and a half spread between the first match point and the end of the match.

90 minutes of play a razors edge away from losing.

I also thought Muller outplayed Nadal in the fifth, but Nadal made some amazing shots to dig himself out of holes several times.

As their careers wind down, I find myself rooting for a Nadal/Federer final in every grand slam.

Congratulations to Muller though.

Well, things have certainly opened up nicely for Fed with Murray and Djokovic both crashing out due to injury.

Down goes Querrey. Damn! After that first set, Sam seemed like a half step behind. Kept battling back, especially when he broke in the fourth set, but just fell apart afterwards.

Classic Fed win today.

Berdych doing well, keeping pace, loses 1st two sets via tiebreaks, has Fed 15-40, 2-3 in the 3rd. Federer responds with ace, ace, service winner, ace. Laughing

Classic Fed.

Not until after she blew her double set point opportunity in the 10th game of the 1st set, when she led 4-5. That game included the best (and longest, I think) rally of the match.

After that, she choked in Grand style.

I think it's safe to say Federer is the greatest of all time.

I didn't figure Fed to win a major, much less 2, (w/ NY left to play), this year.

Greatness.

It just always looks so matter of fact with him.

And ageless.

Quite remarkable.
