Preparations will begin for the FIBA Asia Women’s Cup, held in India from July 19-August 1 2017.

While Brondello will not be available to lead the Opals at that tournament, further appointments will soon be announced that will provide a coaching framework to complement Sandy’s expertise.

A top four finish at that the 2017 FIBA Asia Women’s Cup tournament will advance the Opals to the 2018 FIBA World Championships and begin their road to Tokyo.

I'm a little surprised a national team is fine with having a head coach who won't be there to coach a tournament.

what current Aussies scheduled to play in the WNBA this season would miss time? George? O'Hea? Jarry?

Leilani Mitchell, Erin Phillips, Bec Allen, maybe Steph Talbot (maybe an Opal, maybe a Merc, but maybe neither).
Anyway I think it's more likely that the aussies skip the tournament rather than taking a break from their WNBA teams.

Given that four teams qualify for the Worlds from Asia, the Aussies really shouldn't have any trouble making it through even with a few players missing. China, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand are the 'toughest' competition. Frankly, they should win the damn thing, even missing several players.

But there's no secondary backup qualifying competition, like there's been for the last couple of Olympics. And the whole Asian championships only lasts about a week. So I wouldn't be surprised if they went, just to make sure they qualify, and to try to win the tournament.

I don't know whether she wanted to be there or not, but to me she didn't deserve a spot on the Storm roster this season anyway.
I see 2017 as a year that players are welcome to do their WNBA thing without damaging their chances of playing at the world championships.

Why should that ruin their chances of playing at WC when their coach will presumably be doing the same? Laughing

Bishop was finally getting healthy and playing in France. So she probably decided that she needed some rest aswell

Glad to see O'Hea back with the Opals and getting a fair chance

She's got a jam-packed schedule this year, including a lot of time in Europe and some in the USA. It just doesn't include any basketball until the next WNBL season starts.

Commitments to the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA will preclude Brondello from attending the FIBA Asia Cup but a coaching staff including Penny Taylor and Olaf Lange as well as Flames’ Championship winning coach Cheryl Chambers and Caps head coach Paul Goriss will lead the team.

It's such a weird situation to have your future participation in major tournaments more dependent on other people's performances than your own. She'd basically need a couple of guards to be so good that Mitchell (and in future, Whitcomb) become less necessary. Otherwise Griffin's always going to be a backup option.

Also amusing that Brondello can't go, so she's sending one of her assistants and her husband to coach the team instead.

Belinda Snell is still being considered for national team level competitions?

So I guess Jayco can only have one immigrant player.

Nice to see the ankle breaker, Tessa Lavey back on Jayco.

New coach new opportunities and hopefully no more picking favorites over obviously talented players

Yeah, it's the "obviously talented" part of that inclusion I'm questioning.

Dont worry she will not make the final team if others are healthy. Looks to me like Sandy wanted a vet in the mix now with Penny retired. Im just happy that we wont see Burton starting ( in big games) anymore or Lavey being praised as the next superstar Rolling Eyes

What's wrong with Cambage at the moment? Is she injured or could she just not be arsed? Also no Jarry, and O'Hea still out of the picture. Doesn't seem like the strongest squad that could've gone, even ignoring the players tied to WNBA commitments.

Snell is an interesting inclusion after Joyce basically retired her from international basketball last year. She had a very good WNBL season and came up big in the playoffs. I agree with having some experienced players in the national team, so in this case due to who is available I'm on board with Snelly's inclusion.

Cambage isn't injured, she is spending this year partying around the USA and Europe. O'Hea, Jarry & Batkovic are also unavailable for Opals duties for various reasons (I actually haven't yet heard what O'Hea's reason is. This would have been a nice time for her to return to national duties), so that's why we've got players like Bishop, Snell & Hodges providing the experience.
I actually would have liked to see an experienced guard rather than both Bishop & Hodges. Nat Hurst would have fit in nicely IMO.

It's a good thing the Opals only need to finish in the top 4 to qualify for the worlds, because they are by no means going to breeze through this Asia Cup IMO.

A couple of changes to the team have just been announced.
Bishop & Bunton out (due to injury), with their replacements being Alice Kunek and Alanna Smith.
