I definitely like this draft better than 2018, feel like 7-8 of those players would go top ten in the 2018 draft.

Jennings? No, you got fooled by somebody drinking too much SC Kool-aid. Very Happy

LMAO neither McCowan or Brown are mobile, they won't be able to play at the W pace, projects that will only be able to be used against other slow bigs. Urr who plays no defense, doesn't set screens for her team, doesn't hustle, is only happy when she is hitting and can be inconsistent Laughing Laughing

Brown reminds me of Kara Braxton, on the right team, she should be pretty dominate.

Kara Braxton? You’re probably making Laimbeer salivate right now. Razz

A Brown/ Wilson front court would be one of the best in the league in a short time.

I think that some people forget that big immobile posts can't park them selves in the paint, even Oklahoma gave Brown fits when she couldn't sit herself under the basket.

Dammit you beat me to it Queenie! Where did you find the stats? I couldn’t get it to load on UConn’s website.

I'm going to put in another plug for my favorite widget: http://web1.ncaa.org/stats/StatsSrv/careersearch

Like I said, I had a hunch and plugged in Swin Cash (whereupon I discovered that her stats as Swin and her stats as Swintayla have not been unified, unlike more modern name variations). Going to her stats page gave me a link to that year's UConn squad, which I then sorted by PPG.

(and today's bonus geekery: if a school has the year-by-year W/L record listed, they may also have statistics in PDF format that are NOT in the searchable database, which only goes back to 1998-99 oh my GOD I nerded out so HARD you have no idea)

The UConn website has a lot of broken links since they revamped (= made it worse) about five years ago. The 2002 team's stats don't appear under the broken "Statistics" link but under the "Media Center" link.

http://www.uconnhuskies.com/datadump/WBasketball/2002/MediaCenter/uconn.pdf

In answer to my question, yes, in the 2002 WNBA draft Sue Bird, the third scorer and most TO's, was drafted first, and Asjha Jones, the fourth scorer, was drafted fourth. Swin Cash was drafted second and Tamika Williams-Raymond was drafted sixth. The second best scorer, Diana Taurasi, was only a sophomore.

Jessica Moore and Ashley battle also played in the WNBA, with Moore starting on the Sparks under Jelly Bean Bryant.

This college team was better than almost all WNBA teams in history.

Back to Gabby Williams. Note that Swin Cash was 0-1 on 3pt shots in her senior year, yet Bill Laimbeer tried to turn her into a frequent 3pt shooter in her first year in Detroit. Was he successful?

Depends what you mean by successful. She spent the rest of her career shooting them occasionally. Outside of the one freak year in Seattle, she didn't spend much of her career hitting them.

The Barber’s Chair Early Mock

https://www.barberschairdigital.com/blog-posts/2018/2/3/2018-wnba-draft-preview

(Full analysis at the link) | 2017 record | Biggest needs |

1. LAS VEGAS ACES | 8-26| EVERYTHING, TALENT, TALENT, TALENT, FRANCHISE PIECE - A’ja Wilson

2. INDIANA FEVER | 9-25 | HEALTH, SIZE IN THE POST, SCORING - Kelsey Mitchell

3. CHICAGO SKY | 12-22 | WING PRODUCTION, DEPTH IN THE POST, BUY-IN - Gabby Williams

4. CHICAGO SKY | 12-22 | WING PRODUCTION, DEPTH IN THE POST, BUY-IN - Jamie Nared

5. SEATTLE STORM |15-19 | BACKCOURT DEPTH, BACKUP POINT GUARD, BENCH PRODUCTION - Lexie Brown

6. DALLAS WINGS |16-18 | CONSISTENT POINT PRODUCTION FROM DEEP, BENCH - Diamond DeShields

7. WASHINGTON MYSTICS | 18-16 | WING SCORING, BENCH PRODUCTION, REPLACING EMMA’S PRODUCTION - Victoria Vivians

8. PHOENIX MERCURY | 18-16 | CONSISTENT PRODUCTION FROM ROTATION, YOUTH INFUSION - Maria Vadeeva

9. CONNECTICUT SUN | 21-13 | MAINTAIN & IMPROVE, ADDITION WITHOUT SUBTRACTION - Ariel Atkins

10. NEW YORK LIBERTY | 22-12 | WING DEPTH, POINT GUARD? CONSISTENT HELP FOR CHARLES IN CHARGE - Linnae Harper

11. LOS ANGELES SPARKS | 26-8 | SHOOTING, DYNAMIC PLAYMAKING OFF THE BENCH - Mercedes Russell

12. MINNESOTA LYNX | 27-7 | INFUSION OF YOUTH, ATHLETICISM - Jordin Canada 🇨🇦

Nice pick, Liberty. Who needs Kia Nurse when you can get Linnae Harper? Katie Smith does love OSU though.

That’s the second time I’ve seen Atkins go to Connecticut. People know Miller.

Megdal already revising his previous mock with version 2.0
https://summitthoops.com/2018/02/09/2018-wnba-draft-big-board-v-2-0/

Megdal Mock Draft 2.0
1. A’ja Wilson
2. Kelsey Mitchell
3. Diamond DeShields
4. Gabby Williams
5. Jordin Canada (+4)
6. Maria Vadeeva
7. Azura Stevens
8. Lexie Brown
9. Victoria Vivians (+4)
10. Monique Billings
11. Tyler Scaife (+4)
12. Kia Nurse

13. Las Vegas Shakayla Thomas
14. Indiana Stephanie Mavunga
15. Connecticut Jaime Nared (-4)
16. Atlanta Katelynn Flaherty
17. Seattle Mercedes Russell
18. Dallas Ariel Atkins
19. Washington Taeler Deer (Huh?)
20. Phoenix AJ Alix
21. Connecticut Vionise Pierre-Louis
22. New York Brook McCarty
23. Los Angeles Morgan William
24. Minnesota Natalie Butler

25. Las Vegas Jackie Kemph
26. Indiana Loryn Goodwin
27. Atlanta Rebecca Greenwell
28. Chicago Ke’Shunan James
29. Seattle Teana Muldrow
30. Dallas Tyra Buss
31. Washington Gabbi Ortiz
32. Las Vegas Myisha Hines-Allen
33. Connecticut Lexi Bando
34. New York Kristen Confroy
35. Los Angeles Kolby Morgan
36. Minnesota Carlie Wagner

Boo-yah on #36! Megdal knows who to listen to.

He pulled McCowan out since last version and replaced her with Canada.
McCowan says she wants to get her degree, but early in the season Stevens claimed she was staying the full tilt, so I’m not sure why she stays in the mock.

He swapped Scaife and Nared since the last mock. Listening too much to WNBA 09. Nared would be a nice fit with the Sparks.

That Deer came out of nowhere to crash into the middle of his second round. Must have had a big game.

Stevens needs another year. Hopefully she will embrace it. I wouldn’t take either McCowan or Brown as they are more like the slow big posts who sit the bench and only play limited minutes. Not worth a lottery pick.

Idk why Megal still has Stevens listed. I think she stays. Esp since she hasn't really been lighting it up this season. I think Scaife has been slept on in this class, but as a Sparks fan I'd prefer Nared, Nurse or even Russell if they were still on the board.

Aglers is not going to be interested in a player who is not a good 3 point shooter and doesn't play team ball.

Sorry to call you out but this is a pet peeve of mine. Dominate is something you do; dominANT is something you are. But yes, I agree that she could be a dominant post in the WNBA. Wink

I think it’s pretty laughable at this point that he doesn’t even have McPhee getting drafted at all. From Freshman to Senior she’s the most improved player in the class, which bodes well for her continued improvement.

Since you started this, PG, it also bugs me inordinately since the malapropism is now so widespread. To say it a different way, "dominate" is a verb and "dominant" is the adjective.

McPhee should get drafted. Sticking on a roster long term is another story.

Draft-eligible Kitija Laksa of USF just went off for 18 pts in the first quarter against Ohio St. She's cooled off a bit since then, but still.

im watching this game too, she is a dangerous shooter, she got a quick shot, a nice pull up game and can drive the basketball. definitely a underated player that needs more attention

Senior Jespersen from USF is even more so under the radar.

She's a junior . Why would she come out early? I hate all the encouragement for juniors to jump early.
