I believe Laney is under contract so there's another TC 4...coming off major injury tho...and they could have waived her without me (or anyone else) Noticing LOL

Great work Toad!

I'm not convinced Barbee has the 12th spot in NY, I totally think Burdick has the 11th spot though.

I think everyone is still a possibility for the 12th spot. I'm growing fond of the go bigger concept with Burdick getting the 11th spot and Raincock-Ekunwe getting the 12th spot with one being transitioned into a full-time 3 while the other becomes the deep bench stretch 4 behind Charles and Zahui B.

If they don't go big I think the desire for another "real" PG gives Allen some hope, giving Alston another shot makes me think they might have regretted cutting her last season for instance they didn't invite back Bulgak, Hopkins or Orrange from last years camp, so an invite back might mean something, and if Schimmel's heart is still in it and she comes back in shape and fighting I wouldn't count her out, that's a big if but I feel like someone on the team wants her to succeed, just a feeling, but Shoni might actually have the best long range shot and handle on the team, she just needs to raise her defense from liability to mediocre, which might be a tall order. Granted Barbee has gotten the most praise from Laimbeer so she could be the one, but I think it is far from a done deal for the last spot.

So I'm never clear on who counts and who doesn't count wrt maximum roster size. Will Hamblin count this year or not? Do they need to shed three or four other players?

Can someone describe in 50 words or less the rules regarding when inactive players still count?

Hamblin's still under her rookie scale contract, so not reserved. But as she's essentially not going to show up, they can just suspend her. Doesn't count on the cap, or on the roster total of 11 or 12.

They could also just cut her. I'm yet to see why several people seem to have so much faith in these giant stiffs that have come out of school in recent years.

More than 50 words, but I think I can be clear:

1) If you expect a player to come back this season, you use a temporary suspension. She doesn't get paid or occupy a roster spot until she returns. However, her entire annual salary hits the salary cap.

2) If the player is not expected to return this season, you use a full season suspension. Then you are free for the season: no salary, no roster spot, no salary cap hit. Once it's done, you cannot change your mind.

3) Sometimes teams keep an injured star player on the roster after an off-season injury. Either they want to keep the player happy or it's deemed that the origin of the injury was sustained while playing for the WNBA team. In that case, the player is officially active even though she can't play.

Thank you.

The term "reserved player" seems often to be used. What is a "reserved player" in terms of who can be a reserved player, how does one become a reserved player, and does a reserved player count for any purpose?

Also, with a temporary suspension, are you saying the full annual salary counts against the salary cap even though only, say, half or less of that amount is actually paid? So the first dollar paid triggers the full annual contract amount counting against the cap?

Why would they do that, and how could you possibly backfill her roster spot during her absence? (And have both the absent and replacement player salaries count?)

From the CBA:

Quote:
Any Veteran Free Agent who has three (3) or fewer Years of Service on the first day of any Salary Cap Year will be a Reserved Player if her Prior Team makes a Reserved Qualifying Offer to the player

If the team makes a qualifying offer, the player can only re-sign with that team. They're not allowed to negotiate with other teams.

A reserved player is someone who's contract has expired, but has not accumulated enough time (4 yrs) to become a restricted free agent. Usually, it's a young player who was cut and subsequently signed with another team for one year or less. As long as your team makes a qualifying offer, you can't negotiate with anyone else. If they don't make the offer, then you become an unrestricted free agent.

For a temporary suspension, the full annual salary hits the cap immediately. That's the price you pay for having the flexibility of bringing the player back. Otherwise, no one would ever use the full year suspension. It doesn't matter when the player comes back. She's on the cap and already accounted for. Her return is only relevant to salary paid and roster spot.

Adding a temporary replacement is doable, but you have to manage the cap carefully. Last year, the Liberty had to replace Swin Cash with the cheaper Ameryst Alston to start the season. They were carrying the dead weight of Piph Prince's cap charge, and then they unexpectedly traded for Zahui B. As a former #2 pick, AZB made more money than most players on a rookie contract. The shortage was so small that NY could swap Cash back for Alston after only 3 games. Later, they freed some more cap space when they cut Lindsay Harding and replaced her with Rebecca Allen. So, as you can see, it can become very detailed. Sometimes, teams will simply go without a replacement because they can't scrounge up the money or because it's too much of a hassle.

Reserved players are also often foreigners who went undrafted, and eventually signed 1 or 2 year contracts. When you sign like that as an undrafted free agent the salary can't go above the minimum, so it makes sense to keep the deal short. Then, when they're reserved, they can be paid up to the max (with the leverage of "pay me what I'm worth or I just won't come at all").

Some teams are miles under the cap, so the figure from the temporary suspension being on their books is no big deal. In fact, in the past some teams have 'temporarily suspended' players who were very unlikely to play, because it made it easier to get up to the salary floor, never mind staying under the cap.
